Accommodation in Gratot
Gratot draws attention to historic buildings and different forms of heritage. The Château de Gratot preserves the remains of historic buildings; at Ermitage Saint-Gerbold, the history of a hermitage and the legend of Saint Gerbold take centre stage. Église Notre-Dame and its cemetery are also part of the protected heritage. The Circuit de la Fée adds a walking trail that connects history and nature to these themes.
Château de Gratot: explore its architectural history
Today, the Château de Gratot preserves the remains of buildings dating from the 13th to the 18th century. You can explore the grounds independently along the historical and architectural trail “Des siècles de vie.” The trail extends across the entire site. Its historical and architectural focus draws attention both to individual buildings and to the site as a whole.
The château can be visited year-round from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Each summer, it hosts temporary exhibitions by artists from the region. The visiting hours therefore differ from the seasonal exhibition programme. Check the current hours before travelling and, if you want to see an exhibition, its specific dates; dates and programme may change.
Ermitage Saint-Gerbold: history and visiting
Ermitage Saint-Gerbold is one of the few hermitages still preserved in France. Its chapel was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and converted into a hermitage in the 17th century, around 1620. This timeline distinguishes the chapel’s earlier construction from its later use as a hermitage.
Information panels in the outdoor area, accessible at all times, explain the history and architecture of the hermitage, the legend of Saint Gerbold and the life of the hermits. The outdoor area can be visited year-round; visits to the interior are possible on request. The panels may be subject to change. If this information is important to your visit, check beforehand that it is still available.
A limestone statue of Saint Gerbold associated with the hermitage, dating from the second half of the 15th century, was found in several pieces beneath the flooring in 2002. The date of its creation and the year it was found mark different points in time: the statue dates from the 15th century, and was discovered in 2002.
Église Notre-Dame: protected status and features
The church and cemetery in Gratot have been listed in their entirety as a Monument historique since 18 August 1949. On the triumphal arch at the entrance to the choir is a carved, polychrome-painted oak ensemble featuring a crucified Christ. The protected status and the church’s features offer two distinct perspectives: the listing applies to the church and cemetery as a whole, while the wooden work is a specific feature inside the church.
Circuit de la Fée: history and landscape
The Circuit de la Fée walking trail in Gratot connects history and nature, passes remarkable monuments and runs through an idyllic landscape. Unlike the themes focused on individual buildings, it brings the connection between monuments and their surroundings to the fore. Those looking for a landscape perspective alongside architectural history will find a different focus here.
