Champcey brings together a historic pilgrimage route, two walking loops and sacred heritage. This gives you different focal points to consider when planning your trip: you can explore the Chemin de Saint-Michel and its connection to Mont-Saint-Michel, assess a circular route by its length and walking time, or learn about the features of the Église Notre-Dame.

Walking the Chemin de Saint-Michel

The Chemin de Saint-Michel is a historic pilgrimage route and a variant of the Chemin aux Anglais to Mont-Saint-Michel; it passes through Champcey. Its connection with Mont-Saint-Michel gives the route a clear focus on the pilgrimage site. The Chemin also offers views over the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. The route runs mostly along unpaved paths and is well signposted. When planning your walk, the path surface and signposting are as much a part of the route’s character as its pilgrimage connection. The Chemin therefore offers a different kind of outing from the circular routes: here, the pilgrimage destination and views of the bay are the main attractions, while with the loops, the distances are the main point of comparison.

Comparing two circular routes

Both circular routes start at the Place de la mairie in Champcey. La Boucle des Fourches is a 4.2 km loop. La Boucle du Manoir starts at the same place, measures 3.5 km and takes about 50 minutes to walk. It is therefore the shorter of the two loops and also provides an approximate walking time as a guide; Fourches is the longer route. The Boucle du Manoir also offers a view of the Château de Chantore. The route also passes the Église de Champcey, with its retable, and the cemetery. The loop thus combines its distance with named landscape and religious landmarks.

Church and heritage

The Église Notre-Dame de Champcey is also of interest to travellers interested in sacred art. Its high altar is notable; the retable was restored in 2017. A retable is the structure behind the altar, and therefore a central part of its furnishings. In the choir are two statues from the high altar retable: the Virgin and Child and Saint Joseph. Both are listed as cultural heritage objects. The year 2017 refers to the restoration of the retable, while the heritage listing applies to the two statues.

A glimpse into local history

Local history also includes an event from 1944. After the landing, a camp for American soldiers was set up on a field in the commune of Champcey, between Fondraye and Champs Guillaume. The date and named locations place this historic event within the commune.

A longer option for mountain biking

For mountain biking enthusiasts, La Boucle VTT is another option: a 35 km mountain bike route whose route map includes Champcey. At 35 km, it is considerably longer than the two walking loops. This gives you a longer cycling route and two shorter walking loops of different lengths to compare.
