Cérences: Church, Washhouse and Trails
Accommodation in Cérences
Cérences offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: historic buildings, hiking and cycling routes through the bocage and valleys, and the La Forêt des Elfes adventure park. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether architectural history, a hike, the pilgrimage route, cycling, or adventure courses is most important for your trip.
Notre-Dame Church and the Story of a Statue
Notre-Dame Church in Cérences has an original nave dating from the early 13th century and a stone-vaulted choir dating from the early 14th century. The different construction periods give the church two clearly distinct historical points of reference.
The small statue of Notre-Dame de Cérences can still be seen in the church today. Its story is linked to Jehan du Bois, a knight of Pirou: through his marriage to Jeanne de Carbonnel, the heiress of a local lord, he became lord of Cérences and gave the statue to the community on that occasion.
The Lavoir de l'Hôtel Roy
The Lavoir de l'Hôtel Roy washhouse in Cérences dates from 1924 and has two basins. It is surrounded by a covered gallery with a gabled roof. A gabled roof consists of two sloping roof planes that meet at the ridge.
The washhouse served as a social meeting place. Women beat, scrubbed, rinsed, and wrung out their laundry there while chatting. Washing and conversation were thus part of the same everyday routine: alongside its architectural history, the washhouse offers a glimpse of community life in the area.
Hiking and the Pilgrimage Route
The La Vallée de la Chaussée circular trail is an easy family hike through the bocage and valleys of Cérences. It starts at the washhouse, runs between streams and sunken lanes, and is 4.5 km long; it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Cérences is also a stopping place on the Chemins du Mont-Saint-Michel. Pilgrims today stop there to admire the church. You can join a guided tour of the village with local guides; please confirm availability locally.
Adventure Park and Cycling Routes
The La Forêt des Elfes adventure park is just outside Cérences, on the road to Quettreville-sur-Sienne. It has more than 60 different adventure activities, including 10 zip lines. Its courses are suitable for ages three and up. When choosing an activity, you can weigh up a hike against an adventure park with courses and zip lines.
Two cycling routes offer different experiences: Les trois vallées passes through the three green valleys of the Sienne, Boscq, and Vanlée. The VTT – Les hameaux de Cérences mountain biking route runs through the bocage and hamlets of Cérences; sunken lanes connect the Sienne Valley with the Airou Valley.
