Discover Brouains
Accommodation in Brouains
Brouains offers several points of interest for a stay: architectural history, the former use of water power, trails and mountain biking routes. The village lies between a deep valley and wooded hills. When planning your trip, you can consider cultural history and outdoor activities as distinct areas of interest.
Landscape and the history of water
The Sée, a coastal river, runs through Brouains via the Valley of a Hundred Mills. Paper makers once harnessed the river’s power to run paper mills. This connects the valley’s name to a specific former activity: papermaking and the use of water power. The Fontaine Saint-Gilles is also part of the local history of water, though in a different way. It once supplied a large washhouse farther downstream. The waters were believed to have healing properties; this is a local tradition. The river and the fountain thus represent different historical contexts: the former use of the river’s power and the fountain’s role in supplying the washhouse.
Chapel, church and calvary
The present-day building of the Chapelle Saint-Anne de Montfort dates from 1850. Every year, the Assemblée de Montfort is held around the chapel: a regional celebration that is partly religious and partly civic. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the dates before travelling.
The Église Notre-Dame de Brouains was built at the end of the 15th century and has a painted and gilded wooden high altar from the 18th century. The building and altar therefore belong to two different centuries: one date refers to the church building, the other to the altar. The Calvaire du Logis is another historic structure. It is made of granite, and its architectural features suggest that it dates from the 17th century.
Trails through Brouains
Four marked circular trails start in the village of Brouains. The GR 22, which runs between Paris and Mont-Saint-Michel, also passes through the village. The Les Moulins de la Vallée de la Sée route starts at the car park in the village centre. The circular trails offer loop routes; the GR 22 is defined by its route between the two places mentioned and its passage through Brouains. Les Moulins can be identified by its central starting point and the named landmarks along the way.
This route passes the Calvaire du Logis and the Chapelle de Montfort, goes by the private manor house Moulin de la Sée and the Moulin du Désert, and runs near the Fontaine Saint-Gilles. When choosing a route, you can therefore use a variety of reference points: the shape of a circular trail, the GR 22’s route through Brouains, or a route with specific buildings and waterside locations named. You can weigh these features according to which aspects of the village interest you on your trip.
Mountain biking routes
The Stade VTT Espace Loisirs Nature des Bosses de Brouains is a dedicated point of reference for mountain biking routes. The facility has a range of trails. This offers another type of activity to consider when planning your trip, alongside the circular trails and the GR 22, which passes through Brouains. If you would like to include mountain biking in your plans, you can consider this separately from the village’s buildings and history.
