Discover Valhuon: Hiking, Music and Church
Accommodation in Valhuon
You can plan a stay in Valhuon around a range of interests: the Church of Saint-Omer provides an architectural highlight, while hiking options, running events, and dance events offer different ways to get active. When planning, it is particularly useful to distinguish between a one-off, scheduled event and recurring activities. This will help you decide whether architecture, a hike, or an event featuring music and dance is the main reason for your trip.
Church of Saint-Omer: distinctive bell tower
The most distinctive feature of the Church of Saint-Omer is its tall, square bell tower, built of ashlar stone. Moulded cornices divide it into six storeys, and four diagonal buttresses flank the tower. Its upper section has two windows on each side. A small, five-sided stone stair tower is also attached to the bell tower. Pinnacles—that is, slender architectural ornaments tapering to a point—and animal-shaped gargoyles complete its silhouette. The result combines a clear basic form with an elaborately articulated tower.
Hiking: landscape, route, and format
The Sentier le Moulin Blanc hiking trail crosses the plain and is notable for its varied built heritage. The Abbaye de Belval depuis Valhuon route starts at the Valhuon community hall and initially crosses the plains towards Brias. The distinction is useful when choosing: the Moulin Blanc route highlights the plain and built heritage, while the Belval route specifies a starting point and its initial direction.
Another hiking option is Le Trèfle du Diable, a non-timed hike for trail runners and hikers. Les Courants d’Air has organised it since 2025, with distances ranging from 10 to 45 km. This range gives you a practical way to compare routes by distance. Before travelling, check whether a current edition is taking place on your travel dates.
Events featuring hiking, music, and dance
If you want to plan your trip around a specific day, the Ultra Marche du Ternois can provide a concrete focal point. The event is scheduled to take place in Valhuon on Saturday, 27 March 2027, and is organised by the Sur les Traces de David association. The hiking event is non-competitive and takes place at an unhurried pace. The STD Festival is the renewed after-sport part of the Ultra Marche; it offers all participants live concerts and live music. The date, participation requirements, and programme may change. Check the details before travelling.
Two associations also offer recurring activities. Les Courants d’Air is a club for running, hiking, and Nordic walking. Its Sunday outings start at 9:30 a.m. at the Salle du Rietz. Folk Ambiance holds introductory sessions in historical and folk dances there on the first Thursday of each month from September to June, excluding public holidays, from 8:15 to 9:30 p.m. These activities offer different time slots: the outings take place on Sunday mornings, while the dance sessions are on the first Thursday evening. Confirm local times before travelling.
