In Roquetoire, different interests come together for a stay: local history, signposted hiking trails and community cycling activities. The trails start at Place de Roquetoire; Château de la Morande, Saint-Michel Church and the bunker each bring their own historical themes. You can plan your trip around culture, outdoor activities or seasonal events.

History in buildings and objects

Château de la Morande was built in the early 18th century by the Marquis de Lully, primarily from white stone. Its early date and named builder place the château in a different era from Saint-Michel Church and the bunker. The building material is also part of its architectural history: white stone was the main material used.

Saint-Michel Church replaced a predecessor that had become too small and was rebuilt in 1871 as a Neo-Gothic brick church with three aisles. The church’s style, material and layout can thus be distinguished: Neo-Gothic describes the style, brick the building material, and three aisles the layout of the interior. The church presents visitors with liturgical objects beneath the processional canopy. Another dated object is the processional banner depicting Saint Michael and Saint Sebastian; it has been listed as a protected object since June 23, 1981.

The bunker as a distinct historical subject

During the Second World War, the bunker in Roquetoire served as a post for remote control of V2 rockets and became operational in 1943. It is 35 metres long and 22 metres wide. Its military function clearly distinguishes it from the architectural history of the château and church: here, the focus is on its wartime use and the building’s dimensions. The year 1943 places the bunker in time, while its length and width describe its size.

Hiking trails for planning your trip

Two signposted hiking trails start at Place de Roquetoire: Les Héringaux and La Vallée. For Les Héringaux, the distance, duration and difficulty level are specified: this moderately difficult circular hike is 13.8 kilometres long and takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. Allow for this duration when planning, and check trail conditions before setting off.

The route also gives Les Héringaux a distinct character. It follows the Vieux Chemin de Thérouanne, also known as Chemin des Héringaux, and runs alongside the Marais de Warnes. On the return, it follows the Liauwette and then heads towards the Bois de Ligne. This means you can plan this hike with both a time frame and named points along the way in mind.

Events throughout the year

The Salon du terroir takes place every year at the end of winter and welcomes local producers and craftspeople. In July, the Madeleine-Ducasse includes fairground attractions and a concert by the Harmonie. The community festival in October also features fairground attractions and a concert by the Harmonie. The dates of both festivals may vary. If your trip coincides with one of these event periods, check the specific dates in advance.
