Le Sars: History and Routes
Accommodation in Le Sars
Le Sars offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: local history, the Église Saint-Pierre du Sars, connections to the First World War, and two routes of different lengths. The 9 km Sentier de la Butte de Warlencourt runs from Warlencourt through Le Sars and on to Pys; the village is also listed on the 90 km Véloroute de la Mémoire (V32) between Amiens and Arras. Two named accommodations also have addresses in Le Sars.
Local History and Church
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Le Sars and Warlencourt-Eaucourt formed a shared community. A distinctive local emblem is the coat of arms: on a blue field, it shows a silver church portal on a gold base, flanked above by two gold stars. The Église Saint-Pierre du Sars is also located in Le Sars.
Le Sars in the First World War
Two dates mark the village’s wartime history: on October 7, 1916, Le Sars was captured by the British 23rd Division. On August 25, 1918, the Third Army captured the village again. Just under two years separate the two events. The Warlencourt British Cemetery is in the surrounding area. Graves from the former Hexham Road Cemetery in Le Sars were transferred to this cemetery. It contains 3,505 graves and also commemorates Commonwealth personnel from the First World War.
Walking Trail and Véloroute
The Sentier de la Butte de Warlencourt is 9 km long and starts in Warlencourt. It leads to Le Sars and continues from there to Pys. The trail also loops around the Butte, crosses the Rio du Curé, and then heads west toward Le Sars. Its length, the sequence of villages, and the landscape it passes through describe different aspects of the same trail: you can follow the Warlencourt–Le Sars–Pys sequence and also include the Butte and the Rio du Curé as waypoints. Check the current signposting and trail conditions before setting out.
The Véloroute de la Mémoire (V32) is 90 km long and runs between Amiens and Arras; Le Sars is listed as a village along the route. The main difference from the Sentier is the scale: the 9 km trail through Warlencourt, Le Sars, and Pys contrasts with the 90 km connection between Amiens and Arras. If you are considering riding the V32, check the exact route and signposting in advance.
