If you are considering Hesdin-Lʼabbé as a place to stay, specific historical connections can help you get a sense of the destination. Buildings, works of art, and former rural uses offer different insights into the history of the town. The date of construction, the later use of a building, and the history of an object can be clearly distinguished.

The Château and its history

The Château d'Hesdin l'Abbé was built in 1766 for Michel Cléry de Bécourt. In 1804, during the Camp de Boulogne, it was the residence of Marshal Berthier. The two years mark different chapters: 1766 refers to its construction for Cléry de Bécourt, while 1804 marks the building's later role as a residence. This allows you to distinguish the Château's origins from its use in the historical context of the Camp de Boulogne.

Saint-Léger: Architectural history and art

The parish church of Saint-Léger is located on Rue de l'Eglise. It is probably an 18th-century building; the year 1729 appears on one of the choir windows. From 1862 to 1867, the church was almost entirely rebuilt. The inscription on the choir window and the period of rebuilding refer to different things: the year 1729 appears on the window, while the years 1862 to 1867 date the later structural changes.

The nave contains four geometric stained-glass windows. Two are dated “Lille 1912” and bear the signatures of Dreptin and Depienne. Saint-Léger also houses the painting “Laissez venir à moi les petits enfants,” created by Spindler in 1856. It has been listed as a protected object since 7 September 1987. The year it was created and its later protected status mark different stages in the painting's history. If you would like to see the interior, check access in advance.

Landscape and former uses

In the area around the Sentier Les Fontaines, Hesdin-Lʼabbé is situated between the Boulogne forest massif and the coastal river La Liane. The Fontaine du Bouzat is located along the trail. It was a watering place for livestock where cattle drank, and thus represents a specific former use of the local area. The landscape setting and the history of the watering place add a connection to rural everyday life to the architectural and artistic history. The Route Nationale 1 also passes through Hesdin-Lʼabbé.

Choose the focus that suits you

To choose between the historical themes, you can consider their different connections: the Château brings together its construction and later use; Saint-Léger combines different building phases with individual works of art; the Fontaine du Bouzat points to a former practical function. If you are planning your stay around your cultural interests, this can help you assess whether the history of Hesdin-Lʼabbé suits the purpose of your trip.
