Church architecture, the history of watermills and regional food offer different themes for a stay in Fléchin. The churches differ in their historical details, surviving features and layout. The Moulin de la Carnoye focuses on the use of water power; the Ferme du Moulin de la Carnoye adds food products to these themes. This allows you to distinguish between architecture, technical history and regional shopping.

Churches and Their Architectural Features

The former parish church of Saint-Martin has been protected as a historic monument since 1926. The foundations and the first storey of the original tower, with its Romanesque paired windows, have been preserved. Paired windows are window openings arranged in pairs; here, they are among the surviving parts of the tower. The year 1926 marks the start of the protection, not the year the church building was constructed.

The Église Saint-Pierre de Boncourt stands in the village centre and is surrounded by its cemetery. Inside the church, the nave and choir are visibly misaligned. The nave is the main part of the church, while the choir is the adjoining area; the misalignment therefore concerns the interior layout. The present church appears to date from the late 18th century. The location and interior offer different points of reference: the village centre describes its location, while the offset axis is a feature of the interior architecture.

The Église Saint-Jacques de Cuhem is a subsidiary church of the parish of Fléchin. Its single-nave layout and choir with a three-sided end give the building a clearly describable floor plan. “Single-nave” means that the nave is designed as a single church space; the three-sided end describes the shape at the end of the choir. A building campaign for the church is dated to 1876. The year provides a historical reference point for this building campaign, while the floor plan describes the spatial arrangement.

Together, the three churches display different features: Saint-Martin has surviving parts of its tower, Saint-Pierre has an offset axis, and Saint-Jacques has a single-nave floor plan with a three-sided choir end.

Water and Mill History

Several streams and small springs run through Fléchin, explaining the presence of watermills. The Moulin de la Carnoye historically used water power generated on site and can be dated in part to the 18th century. The mill trestle with its lantern and the millstone have been preserved. This allows you to distinguish between the general connection between waterways and mills in the commune and the specific features of this individual mill.
