Accommodation in Audincthun
Audincthun brings together themes from the history of technology, religious art and parkland. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these highlights can also shape your itinerary: the V1 pumping station tells the story of a specific water-supply task and its development during and after the war. The park of the Château de Dion de Wandonne brings together landscape design and the history of the château; the church and Dion Chapel each offer their own points of interest. La Nouvelle Aventure adds a campsite to the accommodation options.
V1 pumping station and water supply
The V1 pumping station was built in 1943 to convey very pure water through a pipeline to a nearby V1 launch site. Water quality, the pipeline and the destination of the water were all part of the same technical task. During the 1944 bombing, the large launch site was destroyed, while the pumping station survived the bombing. It subsequently supplied water to the village of Audincthun until 1976. Its original military purpose can therefore be distinguished from its later role in supplying the village. Since 22 March 2012, the pumping station and all its pumping equipment have been listed as a historic monument.
Park and château history
The park of the Château de Dion de Wandonne was redesigned in 1840 using local tree species. Ponds and notable trees are among its surviving features, giving the park landscape a distinctive character. The park is associated with a château built in 1760. The château was destroyed by a fire at Christmas 1917, caused by British troops quartered there. The dates mark different events: 1760 refers to the construction of the château, 1840 to the redesign of the park and Christmas 1917 to the destruction of the château.
Church and chapel
The Church of Saint Nicholas houses a Sainte Épine reliquary cross from the 18th century on the altar in the south side chapel. The Dion Chapel, in turn, dates from the 15th century and has rib vaults with elaborately carved corbels. The two sites have different points of focus: at Saint Nicholas, a specific religious artwork and its exact location are identified, while at the Dion Chapel, the vaulting and stonework details define the architecture. A rib vault is structured by intersecting ribs; the carved corbels form distinctive details on the supports.
