Wattignies: Cultural History and Périseaux
Accommodation in Wattignies
Wattignies offers several different points of interest for a stay: the architectural history of the Église Saint-Lambert, its local confectionery heritage, a cultural program and an agricultural landscape shared by several municipalities. When planning your trip, you can decide which of these themes matters most to you, depending on whether you are particularly interested in architecture, events or landscapes. This lets you choose a hotel that suits the focus of your trip without conflating the different themes.
Architecture and tomb at the Église Saint-Lambert
The Église Saint-Lambert brings together architectural elements from several periods. The choir dates from the 11th century, the tower and bell tower from the 16th century, and the naves were rebuilt in the 19th century. This sequence makes the building’s history easy to distinguish: the choir, tower and naves represent different construction phases. If you are interested in architecture, you can use this chronology to guide you through the different parts of the building. The church also contains a tomb created in 1828 for Charles François, comte de Lannoy, and his wife Alexandrine Charlotte Marie, Marquise d’Avelin. It is protected as a movable object. While the architectural elements show how the church building developed, the tomb commemorates two people.
Confectionery heritage and cultural offerings
The Maison de la Confiserie was founded to preserve the local confectionery heritage. It followed the closure of the Wattignies factory La Pie qui Chante in 2003; the Maison opened to the public in 2005. It is currently closed. This sequence links a turning point in local production with a specific effort to preserve the heritage associated with it.
Wattignies Patrimoine Passion Culture offers historical walks, guided tours and video conferences on local heritage. The Centre Culturel Robert Delefosse offers performances, theater, concerts, comedy events and activities for children throughout the year. While the association’s activities focus on local heritage, the cultural center offers a range of performing arts and events. Individual events and dates vary. If a particular performance is key to your trip, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
The Périseaux agricultural landscape
The Espace Naturel des Périseaux offers a different perspective. This preserved agricultural landscape covers 266 hectares and extends across Wattignies and the neighboring municipalities of Templemars, Faches-Thumesnil and Vendeville. It therefore forms a landscape shared by several municipalities, on a different scale from the individual cultural sites. If the landscape is also a factor in choosing your destination, you can consider Périseaux as a distinct focus alongside architectural history and the cultural program.
Market and access to the CREPS
The traditional Marché aux trouvailles brings merchants and craftspeople together on August 12 at Place Alain Pluss and on August 29 in front of the Hôtel de Ville. The specific dates vary from one edition to another, so check the dates for the relevant market before your trip.
Access to the CREPS de Wattignies is reserved exclusively for people whose activities fall within the center’s remit. Keep this restriction in mind when planning your trip.
