Wambrechies combines architectural heritage with parkland and paths along the Deûle. The Château de Robersart, the Distillerie Claeyssens and the Église Saint Vaast represent different chapters in the town’s history. If you prefer to plan your stay in green surroundings, the Parc de Robersart has paths and a seasonal walking trail; the Circuit du Genièvre offers two loop lengths. A ride on a historic tram and workshops during the short school holidays are also possible points of interest when planning your trip.

Cultural History and Architecture

The Château de Robersart was once the residence of the Lords of Wambrechies and was restored by the municipality as a cultural venue. Its Renaissance design combines local red brick with white stone from Lezennes. The building therefore tells the story not only of a former residence but also showcases the materials that give it its distinctive appearance.

The Distillerie Claeyssens has been producing a recognised genever since 1817. Its building is listed as a historic monument.

The Église Saint Vaast is also one of the town’s notable buildings: the Neo-Gothic church has stained-glass windows by Haussaire, restored in 2004. The former Linière Nicolle flax mill adds an industrial chapter; it is recognised as protected industrial heritage.

The history and potential for visiting the manor houses vary considerably. The Château du Cliquenois is the oldest surviving manor house in Wambrechies and dates back to the 16th century. It is privately owned, so you should not assume that public access is available. The Château Claeyssens was built in 1845. Its features include a central square tower, brick and slate, and parkland with mature trees; the building is used by an association.

The Fort du Vert Galant is a site of military remembrance. Ninety hostages and resistance fighters were executed there. The grounds include a wood and a glacis that has largely been reclaimed by nature. The historic memorial site and the landscape stand side by side here.

Park, Pond and Nature

The 9-hectare Parc de Robersart offers paths, ponds, a recreation area and playgrounds. Walks or picnics can be combined with a look at the developing arboretum, which lies along a seasonal walking trail. The park paths and seasonal trail offer different ways to enjoy time outdoors.

The Étang du Vert Galant is a one-hectare pond in a landscape characterised by hills and woodland. Species found there include herons, kingfishers, bats, foxes, muskrats, woodpeckers, pheasants and rabbits. This variety makes the pond a nature destination in its own right, distinct from the landscaped paths and grounds of the Parc de Robersart.

Routes and Seasonal Activities

The Circuit du Genièvre has a 3.5-kilometre loop and a 12-kilometre loop. Both start at the Château de Robersart, follow the Deûle and cross the surrounding countryside. The difference in length helps you choose how far you want to walk without confusing the two routes with different destinations.

The Tramway touristique du Val de Deûle offers a ride along the Deûle on a historic tram dating from the early 20th century; you can board in Wambrechies. Services run seasonally from May to September. Check the specific departure times and route before planning your trip.

The Musée de la poupée et du jouet ancien holds activity workshops for children on afternoons during the short school holidays. Specific dates may vary. If you would like to include one of these activities in your trip, check in advance for suitable dates.

The Port de plaisance de Wambrechies has 30 moorings. Overnight stays and keeping a boat there year-round are possible. If you would like to book a mooring, confirm availability and the applicable conditions in advance.
