Place de Renescure is considered the birthplace of the village and remains its center to this day. This dual connection links the village’s historical development with its present-day center. Renescure’s heritage offers several perspectives: the interpretation of local history through the “Village Patrimoine” (“Heritage Village”), protected heritage at the Church of the Assumption of Mary and Château dit de Philippe de Comines, and the history of the V1 storage site. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you are particularly interested in an interpretive walk, architecture or wartime history.

Local history on the Village Patrimoine walking tour

The Village Patrimoine walking tour in Renescure is 3.5 kilometres long. Information panels provide explanations in French, English and Dutch. The route length and panel languages offer practical guidance for planning: you can gauge the distance and check which language you would like to use for the explanations.

Local guides can accompany visitors by prior appointment. If you would like to take advantage of this option, arrange a time in advance. This gives you two different ways to learn about the area: the panels and a guided visit. Renescure has a Village Patrimoine walking tour. The network has been developed in the Pays de Flandre since 2009.

Protected heritage at the church and château

The organ loft in the Church of the Assumption of Mary is protected as movable cultural heritage; it was listed on 9 June 1980. The oak wood, loft and openwork balustrade form a unified ensemble. This heritage therefore combines a clearly defined protection status with specific architectural features.

The surviving parts of the so-called Château dit de Philippe de Comines, including the curtain wall, have also been partially listed since 23 April 1981. This illustrates the difference between protected movable cultural heritage and the partially protected surviving parts of a complex.

V1 history and landscape

A complete V1 storage site extended from and was connected to Renescure railway station. Around the site are a paved road and numerous bunkers scattered across nearby pastures. The railway connection and the scattered features in the pastures give the V1 history a specific geographical context. You can therefore understand this subject both through its connection to the station and through the described features of the surrounding area.

Walking routes and practical planning

Another walking route in Renescure is called “Du Château à la Forêt” (“From the Château to the Forest”) and starts at the car park at Castle Zuthove. Check the parking arrangements before setting off if you plan to use this starting point.

For bus planning: the Arc-en-Ciel 1 network route overview lists routes 127 and 129. Before travelling, check current timetables and which stops and connections suit your specific journey.
