Saint-Juéry: Hotels for Culture and Hiking
Accommodation in Saint-Juéry
Saint-Juéry offers useful starting points for planning a trip around culture, industrial history, hiking, and seasonal water sports. If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Juéry, you can first decide whether museums and historic buildings, a particular trail length, or an activity on the Tarn should take priority during your stay.
Culture and Industrial History
The Musée du Saut du Tarn presents 200 years of industrial and social history through animated models, films, and demonstrations. It is located in a former hydroelectric power station at the industrial site, now classified as a historic monument. The visit includes dynamos, alternating-current generators, underground channels, and turbines. The museum thus covers both technical installations and topics in industrial and social history.
You can also encounter the area’s industrial heritage at other sites. Parc Saint-Amour features an information panel and a power hammer that recalls the Saint-Juéry steelworks. The Tour des Avalats is a fortified structure in Saint-Juéry dating from the first quarter of the 16th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since April 12, 1954.
The historical heritage of Les Avalats also includes the Church of Saint-Benoît and an artifact in the former washhouse. The church is first mentioned as a beneficiary of bequests in a will made in 972 by Countess Garsinde of Toulouse. A dugout coffin displayed in the former washhouse in Les Avalats probably comes from the cemetery that surrounded the church.
Saut de Sabo and Walking Trails
The Saut de Sabo is a rocky landscape stretching for more than 500 meters, with a 20-meter-high waterfall. It can be seen from the bridge connecting Arthès and Saint-Juéry. At the beginning of the 19th century, the site at Saut de Sabo proved suitable for establishing a metallurgical plant. The landscape and its industrial history can therefore be viewed as two distinct aspects of this place.
Several walking trails of different lengths and with different highlights are available. The Balade Avalatoise is a circular trail that explores the heritage of Saint-Juéry and Les Avalats. The 2026 route sheet gives its length as 8.3 kilometers; route details may change. The trail is freely accessible every day year-round; check access information before setting out.
The “Du Capial à Caramentran” circular trail is 3.8 kilometers long and carries a label from the Fédération Française de Randonnée. It passes through the medieval fortified village and by the former castle gate, La Portanelle. The “Chemins de Bellevue” are 11 kilometers long and offer views over the Tarn Valley and the old center of Saint-Juéry. The “Chemin des Fontaines,” in turn, is a variant of the GR 36 that follows the Tarn through Saint-Juéry. Based on the stated distances, “Du Capial à Caramentran” is shorter than the Balade Avalatoise and the “Chemins de Bellevue”; the trails also differ in whether they focus on village history, local views, or the river.
Activities on the Tarn and Planning
A canoe or kayak trip on the Tarn runs from Trébas via Ambialet to the hamlet of Les Avalats. In summer, Lo Capial welcomes groups and individuals to canoe and kayak in the Tarn Valley; the starting point is the base in Les Avalats. Routes and operating conditions may change, so check the latest information in advance.
The Trail des Forgerons takes place on the trails and in the woods of the municipality of Saint-Juéry. In 2025, the 20th edition was scheduled following interruptions; another edition was planned for 2027. If you are planning your stay around an event date, check the latest event information.
Several bus routes connect Albi with Saint-Juéry and provide access to the Musée du Saut du Tarn. As the timetable information available there dates from 2021–2022, compare departure times with the current timetable before travelling.
