Lavaur can be explored through its architecture, history and outdoor activities. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose the focus of your trip based on whether you are most interested in religious and fine art, a historic walking tour of the town, or routes for walking and hiking. Each offering has a different emphasis and can help you find the parts of Lavaur that best match your travel interests.

Culture and history in Lavaur

The Cathédrale Saint-Alain is a brick building in the Toulouse Gothic style, built in 1255. Its distinctive features include a wooden organ case dating from 1523, with polychrome carvings and painted decoration. The cathedral is also home to the Jacquemart, which has struck the hour with its axe every hour since 1604. The brickwork, Gothic style, brightly decorated woodwork and hourly strike offer several specific points of interest if you are interested in the town’s architectural history.

Since 17 September 2003, the Musée du Pays de Cocagne has held the designation “Musée de France” under French heritage law. Its collections include religious art, fine art, archaeology, and art and popular traditions. The museum presents two major exhibitions every year. Alongside the historic buildings, visitors can therefore explore a range of art and subject areas.

The Tour des Rondes is also part of the town’s history. It is one of the last surviving remnants of Lavaur’s fortifications, and its construction is thought to date back to 1250. Alongside the cathedral and museum, it offers another trace of the past: the town’s former defenses.

Historic center and puzzle trails

For a walk through the historic center, there is the signposted Itinéraire Historique de Lavaur. It offers a free puzzle game for adults and children aged seven and over. If you enjoy solving puzzles along the way, you can combine the activity with a visit to the historic center.

Another puzzle activity is “La route des Crêtes”: the game begins in Lavaur, where participants solve a series of puzzles. The difference between the two activities may help you choose: the Itinéraire Historique is a signposted route through the historic center, while “La route des Crêtes” begins in Lavaur with a series of puzzles.

Walks, a hiking trail and the Saturday market

The Jardins de l’Évêché in Lavaur are ideal for a stroll. Another way to spend time outdoors is the Voie Romaine in Lavaur, a hiking trail in the pastel-growing area. If you are choosing between a stroll and a hike, the two options have different focuses: the gardens are for strolling, while the Voie Romaine is designated as a hiking trail.

At the Saturday market, visitors can meet local producers and sample specialties from the southwest. The market offers a different focus from the architecture and museum: it is all about meeting producers and sampling regional food. A free document for sightseeing in the town is also available from the Office de Tourisme de Lavaur.
