Visitors who choose Cagnac-les-Mines as a destination encounter a history closely connected with the former coal mining industry. The Musée-mine départemental lies at the heart of the former Carmaux-Albi mining basin and offers technical and social insights into seven centuries of coal mining history. Settlements, paths and memorial sites also shed light on different aspects of this history.

Mining History and Insights into Life Underground

The Musée-mine départemental offers an introduction to the technical and social history of coal mining. Another visitor experience in Cagnac-les-Mines takes you underground: visitors descend in a lift cage and can walk through 300 metres of reconstructed tunnels from a former coal mine. The tunnels and the history of the mining basin offer different perspectives: one focuses on the experience of moving through a recreated mine, the other on the development of work and society over several centuries.

Workers’ Housing Estate, Maison du Polonais and Walking Routes

The Cité minière des Homps was built after the First World War to house foreign workers recruited for the mining industry. Its original layout comprised about a hundred adjoining homes. The history of housing and settlements is therefore also part of the story of mining in Cagnac-les-Mines.

The Balade en sol mineur walking route starts at the Musée-mine départemental and leads to the Homps workers’ housing estate. Information panels introduce visitors to the daily lives of miners and their families in Cagnac-les-Mines. Guided visits to the Cité minière must be booked in advance; check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

A visit to the Maison du Polonais offers insights into the miners’ daily lives through period furnishings and explanatory panels. The panels cover mining and the layout of the housing estate. Individual visitors can enter the Maison after booking in advance to collect the key. Plan for access to this site ahead of time as well.

The Voie verte Chemin des Mineurs offers a different perspective: it connects Albi and Cagnac-les-Mines on foot or by bike. The route follows the track of a former railway line that transported coal and miners between Gaillaguès and the mines of Cagnac from 1894 to 1950. The difference between this route and the Balade en sol mineur is worth noting when choosing your route: the latter leads from the museum to Homps, while the Voie verte connects Cagnac-les-Mines with Albi. Before setting out, check whether temporary works affect the route.

Religious Buildings and Historical Context

The Église Saint-Dalmazy has been listed as a historic monument since 9 December 1970. It may date from the late 15th or early 16th century; the frescoes also appear to be from this period. The listing date refers to its protected status, while the dates of the building and frescoes remain tentative.

The sanctuary of the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Drèche was built in the 14th century and was already a pilgrimage site in 1410. The church extends across several communes. This long religious history adds another historical perspective to the industrial themes.

Relaxing at Lac des Homps and the Regional Context

Lac des Homps is a natural recreation spot near the settlement of the same name and the Musée-mine départemental. Visitors can fish, stroll, go for a run and picnic on the shores in peaceful, pleasant surroundings. Outdoor activities therefore complement the memorial sites.

In the region around Cagnac-les-Mines, Cap Découverte was established as a leisure, cultural, economic and tourism zone. It was based on a redevelopment project involving six communes in the mining basin, including Cagnac-les-Mines. This regional context shows that the history of former mining extends beyond individual places.
