The bastide of Puylaroque stands at an altitude of 280 meters on a limestone promontory. From there, panoramic views stretch across the valleys and hilltop lakes of Quercy Caussadais. Pella Roca is the Occitan name for the town. For a stay, heritage attractions and hiking trails offer different experiences, ranging from a walk through medieval architecture to a longer hike along the PR2 route.

Bastide and Heritage

The heritage walk offered by the Pays d’art et d’histoire takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. It focuses on the town’s medieval architecture and fortifications. The Citadelle was built around 1595 and has a basket-handle arch portal, characteristic of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Église Saint-Jacques is located in the center and is listed in the French register of historic monuments. Its construction history spans several phases: a section of the choir bay dates from the 12th century; the vault was rebuilt in the 14th century, when the nave and chapels were also built. The tower and west façade appear to date from the 18th century. The older part of the church houses a 14th-century reliquary of the Holy Veil of the Virgin Mary. The upper part of the reliquary is made of silver, mother-of-pearl, and wood. If you would like to see the reliquary in person, check in advance whether the church interior is accessible; access may vary.

The dates of the buildings also offer a comparison: the Citadelle was built around 1595, while the church’s architecture includes elements dating from the 12th century through to sections that probably date from the 18th century. The church of Saint-Symphorien adds another dimension to the picture of religious architecture, with its location divided between two communities: it has been listed as a historic monument since 1948; its choir is in Caylus and its nave in Puylaroque.

Comparing the times and distances helps with planning your day: the heritage walk takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, considerably less than the PR2, which takes approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes. In terms of distance, the 25 km PR2 route contrasts with the 4-to-12-km trails starting at the chapel site.

Bees and Honey Production

On the hillsides of Puylaroque, “Bee au Top” offers a visit to the apiary, with insights into the life of bees and honey production. The farm’s products include honey, nougat, gingerbread, fresh pollen, propolis, and French royal jelly. If you are planning a visit, check the current arrangements in advance, as visitor policies may change.
