Bourg-de-Visa lies on a promontory in the Pays de Serres en Quercy, at an elevation of 228 m. If you include this town as a destination in your plans, its architecture, markets and trails offer several different points of interest. The Château, half-timbered houses and stone arcades tell the story of its architectural history; market dates and trails with stated distances help you plan your stay around your interests. The townscape and the Quercy landscape come into view in different ways.

Architecture from the Château to the metal market hall

The Château’s residential building was rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century or the first half of the 16th century. The Église Saint Quirin was built in 1882 on the remains of the castle chapel and is in the Neo-Gothic style. The town thus brings together different chapters of architectural history: a rebuilt residential building and a church whose site is linked to the former chapel.

The half-timbered houses of Bourg-de-Visa bear witness to architecture from the Middle Ages to the 16th century. Another distinctive feature is the covered Cornières, recognisable by their stone round arches. The 1893 metal market hall, with its architecture inspired by the Halles Baltard, offers a different accent. Together, these buildings do not represent a single architectural style, but rather a variety of forms and periods that you can take in on a walk through the town.

Local history and trails

A walk through Bourg-de-Visa takes you past traces of the former castle. The Lavoir du Théron offers a glimpse into everyday life in the past: it was once a meeting place for washerwomen and was built from dressed stone in the 1880s. The Fontaine Saint Quirin is also part of local tradition. It was once considered a healing spring for eye ailments; this is a historical belief, not a medical claim.

For a longer outing, there are two trails to choose from, with different distances and descriptions. The circular hiking trail to the Lavoir du Théron is 7.1 km long and starts in Bourg-de-Visa. The Chemin de Lasbourdettes also starts in the town, is 12 km long and passes through the hilly landscapes of the Quercy. The first route is described as a circular hike and leads to the lavoir; the second route description highlights its stated length and the Quercy landscape. Check the route details before setting off.

Markets and annual events

Bourg-de-Visa’s traditional market takes place every Sunday morning. Local producers and craftspeople from the Pays de Serres en Quercy welcome visitors in the square and under the market hall. As market times can change, it is worth checking the current schedule before your visit.

Gastronomic markets are held every year on Tuesday evenings in July and August. The votive festival is celebrated annually on the second weekend of May. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates or programme for the year you wish to visit. This helps distinguish recurring events from the dates that apply in a given year, without conflating them with the buildings and trails that remain visible year-round.
