Discover Luzech: Dinosaur Footprints, Museums and History
Accommodation in Luzech
Luzech offers a range of starting points for planning your stay: palaeontological exhibitions, folk art, mills, medieval buildings and trails, and activities on the Lot. If you are looking for a hotel in Luzech, these themes can help you explore the town according to your own interests.
Dinosaur Footprints, Folk Art and Moving Exhibits
At Ichnospace, you can see a 60 m² cast of dinosaur tracks and footprints from a 140-million-year-old Jurassic beach deposit. The museum is dedicated to tracks and footprints of dinosaurs and fossil animals; it is considered Europe’s first museum of its kind and holds the “Musée de France” label. Luzech’s specific palaeontological theme is thus brought together with a large-scale exhibit.
Lou Cantou tells the story of daily life in Luzech in the past. The Museum of Folk Art and Popular Traditions features stories about the trades, objects and people that shaped the village. Admission is free; the museum is open during the season and by appointment. Check the opening hours before your visit so that you can take seasonal or pre-arranged visiting hours into account.
The Musée Planète des Moulins displays more than 200 exhibits that move or can be set in motion. The Musée Armand Viré, in turn, displays more than 500 items. These museums have different focuses, ranging from the daily life and traditions of the village to traces of fossil animals, mills and an extensive exhibition.
Medieval Heritage and the Chapel
The Donjon of Luzech now stands 24 metres high. Remains of walls, bastions and seven gates survive from the medieval fortifications; architectural remains can also be found in numerous cellars. The Maison des Consuls is partially protected as a historic monument and is associated with the medieval municipal authority of the consuls of Luzech. Together, these buildings offer different insights into the history of the town.
The Chapel of Notre-Dame de l’Île was built in 1504 to protect boatmen. Interior visits are available exclusively to groups and by prior reservation through the town hall. The chapel is open annually during the week around 15 August, according to the events programme. If you are planning an interior visit, take the group requirement and reservation into account, and check the programme for your chosen date.
Limestone Hills, the Oppidum and the Lot
L’Impernal is one of Luzech’s two dominant limestone hills. The Oppidum is another landscape landmark: a GR 36 hiking trail runs along it, overlooking the Lot. An orientation board at the Oppidum explains the viewpoint, which looks out across the entire valley. The hill and the viewpoint can thus be considered as different aspects of Luzech’s landscape, without assigning them an unspecified walking time or level of difficulty.
Canoeing, E-biking and Visits by Appointment
The CaĂŻx Base Nautique offers a package combining an approximately three-hour canoe trip from Douelle to Caix with an approximately one-hour return journey by e-bike along the voie verte. The activity may only be available seasonally, so it is advisable to check availability for your planned dates.
The cellars of Château de Cayx can also be visited by appointment. Arrange a date in advance and check the arrangements before your visit. Luzech offers a choice of exhibitions and historic buildings, as well as a clearly described activity itinerary and a visit by appointment.
