Frayssinet-Le-Gélat can be explored for travel planning through two specific themes: architectural history and outdoor activities. The Sainte-Radegonde church and the Château de Bargade offer historical points of interest; hiking trails, cycling routes and seasonal recreational swimming add a range of activities to the mix. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these highlights can help you plan your days around culture, exercise or a seasonal water activity.

Church and architectural history

The Sainte-Radegonde church is first mentioned in 1152. Its surviving Romanesque apse may date from the second half of the 12th century. During the rebuilding from 1873 to 1875, the old apse was retained as the entrance portal; the bell tower was added between 1885 and 1888. The semicircular shape describes the apse, while the calotte vault describes its ceiling; sculpted capitals have also been preserved. The church thus brings together early Romanesque architectural features and 19th-century alterations.

The reliquary of Saint Loup at Sainte-Radegonde preserves ex ossibus relics, meaning relics from the saint’s bones. The reliquary is Neo-Gothic and mass-produced; it may date from the late 19th or early 20th century. This possible date range is therefore less specific than the years given for the rebuilding and the bell tower.

The Château de Bargade offers a different point in time. Its main construction phase is assigned to the first half of the 14th century; it also has a 19th-century construction phase. Compared with Sainte-Radegonde, first mentioned in 1152, this main phase came considerably later. The two buildings thus offer different points of reference for the history of the area.

Hiking and other outdoor activities

The Circuit des Trois Communes is an 18.5 km hiking route starting in Frayssinet-Le-Gélat. It follows forest paths along the Thèze stream and through chestnut groves; it is also accessible to horse riders and mountain bikers. The route therefore combines a specific distance with information about the landscape and ways to use it.

The GR 652 stage runs from Salviac to Frayssinet-Le-Gélat. It is 19.5 km long and takes 5 hours 30 minutes. In a direct comparison, it is one kilometre longer than the Circuit des Trois Communes. A specific time is also given for the GR 652 stage, while the Circuit offers a different basis for planning, with details about the route and who can access it.
