For a stay in Arcambal, you can choose from different activities: cultural history, a cycling route or a challenging hike. Cultural highlights include the Château du Bousquet, the Church of Saint-Antoine and the Petit Musée de Christian Verdun. There is another church in Pasturat, while outdoor activities include the greenway between Cahors and Arcambal and a circular hike starting in Arcambal.

Château, churches and traces of history

The Château du Bousquet retains a medieval fortified silhouette, a Gothic stone staircase and a vaulted room. It is partially protected as a French historic monument; protection was granted on 2 March 1979. Its architectural features range from its fortified appearance to details inside the château.

The Church of Saint-Antoine stands near the Château du Bousquet. It was probably built from the late 15th century onwards. The coats of arms of the du Bousquet family appear on some of its vault keystones. The present-day Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Pasturat was rebuilt in the 19th century. The two churches offer different historical points of interest: Saint-Antoine has a probable construction date and coats of arms on its vault keystones, while Notre-Dame was rebuilt in the 19th century.

The Château de Béars is in a different state today: it is a ruin. The remains of a square tower and a curtain wall supported by a buttress have survived. There are also remains of the Bousquet watermill, near the lock in Arcambal. These historic buildings reveal both striking architectural details and visible traces of decay and the former milling operation.

Cycling route and challenging hike

The completed greenway from Cahors to Arcambal follows a former railway line and covers about 9 kilometres as a cycling route. Picnic tables and benches are provided along the way. A 1.5-metre-wide section of earth and stone chippings is intended for GR 36 hikers and horse riders.

Another option is the Circuit de la Cévenne de Béars, which starts in Arcambal. This circular hike is 16.6 kilometres long and graded difficult; the stated duration is about 5 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, there are numerous views over the Lot Valley, and the route also passes typical gariottes of the Causses.

For planning your day, the two routes differ considerably in activity and length: the greenway is an approximately 9-kilometre cycling route between Cahors and Arcambal; the Circuit de la Cévenne de Béars is a longer, difficult hike with a stated duration of around five and a half hours. These details give you concrete points of comparison without equating the two routes.

Museum and seasonal event

The Petit Musée de Christian Verdun displays the artist’s sculptures in a permanent exhibition space. The museum is generally open on Saturdays from 3 to 6 pm and by appointment. Check the opening information before your visit.

The Lot of Saveurs culinary caravan also stops in Arcambal every summer. At the market, around twenty local producers offer food and sweets; festive communal meals are also held. The participating producers change from year to year, and the specific event dates vary too. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the dates before travelling.
