When choosing a hotel in La Mongie, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Specific options include the Grand Tourmalet ski area and the Marmotte route, a visit to the Pic du Midi, and guided walks and hikes in the surrounding area. Conditions vary: in winter, certain access routes depend on lift operations and snow conditions, while road access is subject to a seasonal closure.

Grand Tourmalet ski area

The Grand Tourmalet ski area includes La Mongie, Barèges and the Pic du Midi, and offers 100 kilometres of pistes. Piste details, route layouts and the snowpark layout may be updated, so check the latest information before planning. One specifically named route is the Marmotte route: it runs for eleven kilometres on blue and green pistes between La Mongie and Barèges. This helps distinguish the overall size of the ski area from a specific route you may want to focus on.

Grand Tourmalet also has a freestyle area and a snowpark with boxes, rails and other features. This adds another clearly defined option to the piste offering. Facilities and layout may change between seasons. If boxes, rails or other features are important to your plans, check the current snowpark offering.

Pic du Midi: visit and awards

A visit to the Pic du Midi begins with a 15-minute ascent to the summit; operating hours may vary. The Pic du Midi is also a classified natural site and has been awarded the International Dark Sky Reserve designation. This gives the visit a connection to nature and the night sky beyond planning around the pistes.

The Pic du Midi cable car is accessed from the La Mongie station. Operations are seasonal and weather-dependent. If you plan to take the cable car, check operating conditions for your travel dates.

Road access and pedestrian access in winter

La Mongie is accessible by road all year round. In winter, the Col du Tourmalet is closed to traffic, so the only road access to La Mongie is via the Bagnères-de-Bigorre valley. This restriction should be taken into account when travelling in winter; also check road and driving conditions for your dates.

A pedestrian ticket provides winter access from La Mongie to the Col du Tourmalet via the Chapelle and Espade chairlifts. Snowshoes are required on the route. The ticket also includes the “Nox” and “Le Col des Géants” shows. This access is seasonal and depends on lift operations and snow conditions. Road access and pedestrian access therefore require separate planning.

Guided walks and hikes

Around La Mongie, Aventures en Pyrénées offers guided walks and hikes in the Campan valley or near the Pic du Midi. These focus on discovering the local flora and fauna, with explanations of the landscape. Nature and scenery are the focus here, rather than a piste connection. The programme may change; if you are planning a hike, check availability for your travel dates.

Souvenirs and regional products

The La Mongie tourist office has a shop selling souvenirs and regional products. The selection may change. If these items are important to you, ask the tourist office about the current range.
