When looking for a hotel in Estaing, your plans for days at Lac d’Estaing can help determine whether to opt for an easy circuit, a longer hike, or experiences combining nature and culture. The glacial lake lies at an altitude of 1,161 metres in the Estaing Valley. At the lake and in the surrounding area, hiking trails, nature-watching opportunities and a distinctive architectural heritage come together.

Lac d’Estaing: Circuit and Nature

The Tour du lac d’Estaing is a very easy 2.4-kilometre circuit that takes one hour. The distance and time may change if the route is modified. Along the circuit, information boards cover various aspects of the area, including pastoral farming and wildlife. The trail combines exercise by the lake with information about its landscape.

With a little luck, you may spot waterfowl, griffon vultures, small mammals and marmots at Lac d’Estaing; local plants and flowers are also among the possible nature-watching highlights. The section of the circuit on the left bank, opposite the road, is accessible to wheelchair users with human assistance and carries the “Promenades pour tous” label. Weather and trail conditions can affect accessibility; check conditions before your visit.

Hiking and Activities in Estaing

For a longer outing, a 2.5-hour hike leads from Lac d’Estaing to waterfalls and Lac de Plaa de Prat. Its duration clearly distinguishes it from the one-hour circuit around the lake, so you can plan your day according to whether the shorter circuit or the longer hike better suits your plans. Hiking conditions may vary seasonally.

The GR10, the long-distance trail across the Pyrenees, is also included in Estaing’s municipal list of hiking trails. Estaing also lists walking, mountain hiking, fishing and mountain biking as outdoor activities. Fishing is possible at Lac d’Estaing; a fishing permit is required. Before travelling, check the current fishing regulations and information on how to obtain a permit.

Getting to Lac d’Estaing

Lac d’Estaing is accessible by car; bear seasonal road conditions in mind when travelling there. During peak season, the starting point for the hike to the lake can be reached from Argelès-Gazost, Arras-en-Lavedan, Aucun, Arrens and Estaing by the “Argelès-Gazost > Arrens > lac d’Estaing” summer shuttle. The shuttle runs only on certain days of the week in July and August. Check its current operating days before travelling.

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Estaing

As a complement to the hikes, the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Estaing offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural history. The church was built between 1796 and 1822 and combines imitations of Romanesque and Gothic forms.

Inside is a painted wooden high altar beneath a canopy supported by four wooden columns with Doric capitals. A statue of John the Baptist stands on a dome; there is also a gilded wooden tabernacle. There is no altarpiece. These architectural details provide a different focus from the lakeside landscape and hiking trails and may be worth considering alongside outdoor activities when planning your trip.
