Arrens-Marsous brings together a range of experiences for a stay: the Church of Saint-Pierre d’Arrens, insights into the valleys’ natural environments, and outdoor activities. The options range from a short interpretive trail to marked paths and seasonal winter activities. The exhibition at the Maison du Parc national des Pyrénées also offers a distinct focus. You can balance culture, landscape and activity according to your interests.

Culture and orientation in Arrens-Marsous

The Church of Saint-Pierre d’Arrens is surrounded by an enclosure wall topped with battlements. It has been listed as a historic monument since an order dated 16 February 1989. The wall is a distinctive feature of the church; the listing adds heritage protection status to this architectural significance.

In the town centre, the Maison du Val d’Azun brings together the Maison du Parc national des Pyrénées and the local Vallées de Gavarnie tourist office. It combines an exhibition on the valleys’ natural environments with tourist information in one place. The Maison du Parc offers a sensory exhibition as well as a virtual trail inviting visitors to discover these natural environments.

Natural Environments and Exhibition

The exhibition is divided into three areas: ancient mountain forests, summer pastures and open habitats, and the high mountains. This classification takes visitors from forest landscapes through pastures and open land to the high-alpine environment. During the season, public events complement the exhibition, including film screenings followed by discussions, activities and workshops for children, and guided visits.

The “Gabizos et Vallée d’Arrens” Natura 2000 site also provides a clear geographical framework for the landscape. It includes the high-Pyrenean section of the Gabizos massif as well as the Bouleste and Pouey-Laün valleys. Covering 2,924 hectares, the site extends across the municipalities of Arrens-Marsous and Arbéost.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

On the right bank of Lac du Tech, an 800-metre-long, level interpretive trail is accessible to everyone. Five panels cover geology, mountain landscapes, pastoralism and hydropower. This offers a different format from the longer trails at the Val d’Azun outdoor activity centre: 100 kilometres of marked trails are available year-round between Col du Soulor, at 1,474 metres near Arrens-Marsous, and Col de Couraduque, at 1,367 metres near Aucun.

In winter, activities at the outdoor activity centre depend on snow conditions. When conditions permit, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and an introduction to biathlon are offered; reservations are required for the biathlon introduction. Arrayoulet adventure park is another option: it is suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers, with or without supervision by professional mountain guides.

The Val d’Azun leisure area adds a pump track, a children’s play area with a zip line and a giant marmot figure, a tennis court, a climbing wall and a multi-sport court to the selection. It is open year-round and free to access; free parking is available on site. The sites in the Tech valley are accessible by road and have parking.
