Proupiary: Bonnefont Abbey and Cultural Heritage

Cultural history of the Abbey
Bonnefont Abbey is located in the commune of Proupiary. Cistercian monks from Lorraine founded it in 1136. Since 2019, the abbey has had a museum exhibition area featuring numerous finds from the excavations. The founding year and the museum exhibition area mark different points in time: 1136 dates the foundation, while 2019 marks the start of the exhibition area. The first year turns attention to the origins, the second to a later chapter in the abbey’s history. For travellers interested in cultural heritage, the story of its foundation is thus combined with an archaeological focus.
Garden and plant life
The abbey’s medieval garden covers 700 m². Medicinal plants, dye plants and edible plants are grown there. The three categories refer to different uses: healing, dyeing and food. This gives the abbey theme a botanical perspective alongside its foundation and excavation finds. The garden and the museum exhibition area have different focuses: one is about plant groups, the other about finds from the excavations. If you are planning your interests for a stay, archaeology and plant life are separate topics to choose from.
Trail and cultural heritage
The Chemin de Nankin is a 6 km circular route and is suitable for families. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Pyrenees; visitors can also discover the Cistercian Grange de la Peyrère. Landscape and cultural heritage therefore come together on the same route: the views of the Pyrenees offer a scenic element, while the grange is a named historical landmark. The route’s length and circular format are practical planning details, while the views and the grange shape the mix of themes along the way.
Another cultural site in Proupiary
The Church of Sainte-Catherine in Proupiary is a stone building dating from the 14th century. Together with the abbey, founded in 1136, it offers a comparison between two medieval periods: the abbey originated in the 12th century, while the church dates from the 14th century. This later date adds another named cultural site in Proupiary to the history of the abbey. The local cultural heritage can thus also be understood through the medieval church and its stone construction.
Summer programme and travel
In summer, the abbey offers a cultural programme featuring concerts, workshops and conferences. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular concert, workshop or conference, check the dates for the relevant summer season.
For travel by bus, the liO Arnaud-Guilhem–Église stop is a useful landmark. It is served by the Betchat–Saint-Gaudens routes. From the stop, it is about a 27-minute walk to the abbey. Allow for this approximate walking distance for the final leg, and check the routes and stops again before you travel.
