The Canal du Midi shapes Gardouch just as much as its historic locks and mills. There are also paths for walks, hikes and cycle rides, as well as cultural events at La Minoterie. This means your stay can include both activities by the water and the history of the buildings and town.

The lock and the history of the canal

Near Gardouch, the Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. A decree dated 24 April 1998 placed the Gardouch lock, the lock bridge and the lock keeper’s house on the canal under protection. The bridge has a monumental appearance and is one of the few surviving bridges from the 18th century. The lock keeper’s house was rebuilt in the 1840s to 1850s as a typical mid-19th-century lock keeper’s house and is protected as a historic monument.

A guided tour of the Négra and Gardouch locks covers the construction of the Canal du Midi under Louis XIV, transport by mail boats and trade. Improvements made by the Marquis de Vauban and the canal’s UNESCO status are also among the topics. Check the current booking arrangements before your trip. This brings together the history of the structure and its former role in transport and trade.

On foot, by bike or on the water

The easy circular trail “En passant par les Agals” starts in front of Gardouch town hall, is 7.1 kilometres long and takes about three hours. The route details were updated on 5 May 2025. The route follows the Canal du Midi near the Laval lock. From Port des Agals in Gardouch, you can walk along the canal.

A long towpath along the Canal du Midi near Gardouch is open to cyclists and pedestrians; it connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean and is 242 kilometres long. The two route descriptions refer to different scales: the circular trail, which takes about three hours, and the long canal corridor. This lets you choose between a single circular route and a longer journey along the waterway to suit your travel plans.

On the Canal du Midi near Gardouch, boat trips range from a two-hour electric boat ride to a week-long houseboat rental that does not require a licence. Check current providers and availability before your trip.

Mills and architectural history

La Minoterie is a former mill on the Canal du Midi in Gardouch. Another mill with a history of its own is the Moulin de l’Herqule: built in 1850 on a hill, it overlooks the Lauragais landscape. Its original millstones have been preserved; it is also the only surviving example of the former mills along the ridge. It was restored in the 20th century and is now a prominent landmark for visitors.

Saint-Martin Church also features a distinctive architectural detail: in Gardouch, its choir faces west and its entrance faces east. The lock complex, mill and church thus offer different perspectives on local history—from canal construction and millstones to the orientation of the church interior.

Culture and seasonal refreshments

The Café des Minotiers at La Minoterie regularly hosts amateur and professional performances. The café at La Minoterie welcomes guests to its terrace for drinks and tastings of local products; check the current opening arrangements before visiting.

The former lock keeper’s house at Gardouch harbour serves food and drinks from April to September. This seasonal period is a useful detail for planning if you want to combine your stay with a stop by the canal.
