Discover Bouloc: Church, Washhouse and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Bouloc
Bouloc can be explored through a range of themes: Notre-Dame Church offers a glimpse into architectural and art history, the washhouse provides insight into past water use, and two marked walking trails can be compared by distance and approximate duration. Cap Cheval adds a horse-riding activity with a connection to wine. These highlights can help you plan your trip to Bouloc around your interests.
Notre-Dame: Architecture and History
The first known mention of Notre-Dame Church dates from 1514. Its altarpiece is a large ensemble of carved wood from the 17th century and has been listed as a historic monument since 1933. The dates refer to different points in time: the first known mention of the church, the creation of the altarpiece, and the start of its protected status. The mention therefore predates the creation of the furnishings; their historic-monument status began much later.
The architectural form can also be described precisely: the nave has three bays and leads into a polygonal choir with five sides. A bay is a section of the nave; this figure describes its division, while the five sides specify the shape of the choir. These specific architectural features complement the chronology of the church and altarpiece.
The Washhouse and Watercourse
Bouloc’s washhouse originated at a spring and became a fountain formerly called “Lo Fount Grande.” It served as a watering place for livestock and as a washing place. Its dual use shows its former role in both supplying water to livestock and washing. Water from the washhouse flows into the Cardillou stream, which joins the Girou. The watercourse can thus be followed step by step: from the washhouse to the Cardillou, and from there to the Girou. Its name, former use and watercourse each offer a different insight into this local feature.
Compare Walking Trails by Distance and Time
The Promenade Boulocaine circular walking trail is 6.5 km long, takes about two hours and is marked in yellow. The Sentier aux papillons covers 14 km; its approximate duration is 3 hours 30 minutes. This trail is also marked in yellow and graded moderate. The routes differ in length by 7.5 km, and their estimated durations by around an hour and a half. The Promenade Boulocaine is therefore the shorter option; the longer Sentier also offers panoramic views of the village of Gargas and the Girou Valley. A second starting point for the Sentier is at the Centre de loisirs, opposite Bouloc Town Hall. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Horse Riding and Wine
Cap Cheval in Bouloc is a family-friendly riding stable in a green setting. Activities include horseback wine tours, including day trips through forests and vineyards. Unlike the walking trails, this activity focuses on travelling on horseback while also combining horse riding with a connection to wine. For travellers interested in both subjects, it offers a distinct activity alongside architectural history and walking.
