Azas offers three different points of interest for a trip: landscapes, heritage and an annual sporting event. The old village, the Church of Saint-Martin, the château and L’Azassienne represent different sides of the place. Which of these shapes your stay depends on whether you are more interested in the landscape and architectural history or in a specific event date.

Landscapes and viewpoints

The old village of Azas lies along a ridge and overlooks a valley through which the La Mouline (Sieurac) stream flows. A ridge is the course of a raised crest; the valley and stream form the lower-lying landscape below it. The village, ridge and watercourse thus have a clear spatial relationship.

From Azas, there is a panorama to the southwest of Montpitol and Verfeil. From the northern slope, the view extends to Montjoire and Saint-Sulpice. The compass directions help distinguish the two perspectives: the southwestern panorama and the view from the northern slope lead to different places. Together with the old village’s position above the valley, this creates a landscape shaped both by its elevation and by the named viewpoints.

Church of Saint-Martin

The Church of Saint-Martin has a masonry bell tower and was rebuilt using old materials. The Vedelly coats of arms appear above its entrance portal. Three aspects of the building can therefore be distinguished: the shape of the tower, the history of its reconstruction and the heraldic decoration on the portal. By contrast, the château is not defined by these features of a church, but by its date, private ownership and park. The church thus offers a distinct perspective on Azas’s architectural history.

Château and park

The château of Azas dates from the 18th century and is privately owned. Its park covers more than four hectares and contains a 150-year-old umbrella pine. The size of the park describes the estate on a broader scale, while the umbrella pine is a single landscape feature distinguished by its age. The details about the park’s size and notable trees complement each other, while the château itself is described by its date and private status.

L’Azassienne and travel planning

L’Azassienne is an annual sporting event held in Azas. It includes a duathlon and a mountain bike ride. The two formats make the event a distinct sporting reason to travel. Its annual recurrence does not provide a specific date for your trip: check the event dates and current programme before planning. If you are interested in one of the sporting formats, plan your travel dates around the information for that edition.

When looking for a hotel for a trip to Azas, it helps to decide on the purpose of your visit first. A stay connected with L’Azassienne depends on the specific event date; if your focus is on landscapes and heritage, the ridge, viewpoints, church and château offer different themes to guide you. This can help you decide whether the sporting event will determine your travel dates or whether you would rather plan your trip around the village’s features.
