The Château de Bazian and the fortification remains at Saint-Yors give Bazian a clearly defined heritage theme. There is also the Grand Tour de Bazian, a moderately difficult hiking route over ridges, through landscapes dotted with numerous windmills and into the state-owned Touzan Forest. For planning your trip, you can distinguish these highlights: architectural history and surviving remains on the one hand, and hiking with specified route and time details on the other.

The Château and Its Fortification History

The present-day Château de Bazian features alterations dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and extends over three levels. The entire château is protected as a historic monument, including the surrounding wall, the well and the south wing. Inside, wall paintings from the late 16th to early 17th century have been preserved. The periods overlap at the transition from the 16th to the 17th century, but describe different aspects: alterations to the building and surviving wall paintings.

The fortified tower of Bazian was listed as a historic monument by decree of 1 August 1974 and is one of the last surviving examples of the village fortifications. The village centre is also laid out as a castelnau, and remains of the fortified walls have been preserved. In Bazian, you can therefore find both individual protected buildings and traces of fortifications in the village centre.

Saint-Yors and Other Heritage Sites

The former castelnau of Saint-Yors lies on the left bank of the Mouliaque stream, a few metres north of the château and 1.5 kilometres southwest of the village of Bazian. Only the gate tower and a few sections of wall, adjoining the eastern side of the gate, remain of the former settlement. The fortified gate is a remnant of the village fortifications, probably dating from the late Middle Ages. Its riverside location, direction and distance provide several specific reference points for understanding Saint-Yors.

The architectural landscape also includes old houses, some of which retain very old half-timbered elements. Saint-André Church is historically connected with the castelnau. Another heritage object is a gilded wooden tabernacle dating from the 15th to 16th century. These examples complement the fortifications with half-timbered architecture and religious heritage.

Hiking and Other Activities

The Grand Tour de Bazian is listed as route PR1 by FFRandonnée Gers. This moderately difficult hike is 13 kilometres long and takes about three and a half hours. The distance, difficulty level and approximate duration provide a basis for planning; check route conditions before setting out. Along the way, the route crosses ridges, passes through landscapes dotted with numerous windmills and enters the state-owned Touzan Forest. This lets you assess the tour both by the time it takes and by the landscapes described.

The Les Villages Perchés en VAE e-bike route reaches Bazian after about 700 metres along a departmental road. Check road conditions before setting out. In 2026, La Ferme aux Chevaux offers guided horse rides and pony rides for all levels by appointment. Check availability before your trip.
