If you would like to combine hiking, landscapes and heritage when planning your trip, Versols-Et-Lapeyre offers several specific points of interest. Two circular routes of different lengths can be assessed by their distance and duration and, in the case of Trail N°29, elevation gain. In Versols, religious art, the château and remnants of fortifications add to the local history.

Hikes with Different Profiles

The Vallée du Verzolet et plateau d'Hermilix route is a moderately difficult 10.9-kilometre circular hike with a stated duration of three hours. It starts in front of the church in Versols and ends back in Versols. Trail N°29 Versols–Hermilix is also moderately difficult and follows a circular route: it is 17.4 kilometres long, with 673 metres of ascent and 673 metres of descent; its stated duration is two hours and 15 minutes.

The longer Trail N°29 has a shorter stated duration than the 10.9-kilometre loop. So when planning your time, take into account not just the duration but also the distance, circular route format and the elevation figures given for Trail N°29. Several other hiking trails also start in Versols or Lapeyre and lead, among other places, to the Plateau de la Loubière, the Avant-Causses and Hermilix. Before setting out, check the current route and conditions for the trail you have chosen.

Lavogne, Causse and Sorgues

The De la vallée du Verzolet au plateau d'Hermelix route leads to the Causse d'Hermilix. The landscape there has been shaped by agro-pastoral activities. A distinctive feature is the Lavogne d’Hermilix: this large water basin, lined inside with stone slabs, is used to water sheep. At the same time, it offers a refuge to numerous animal species and forms a small, species-rich, living ecosystem. The habitat’s specific condition may change over time.

The Sorgues crosses the municipality from east to west for about seven kilometres. Near the centre of Versols, it flows into its tributary, the Versolet. The Sorgues is a first-category river and a particularly suitable place for fishing. If you plan to fish, check the applicable regulations and conditions beforehand.

Culture and History in Versols

The Église Saint-Thomas de Versols is one of the local cultural landmarks. A restored 16th-century church in Versols houses a popular painting from the 17th century. It depicts Saint Thomas placing his finger in Christ’s wound.

The Château de Versols dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is listed as a historic monument for its façades and roofs, its Gothic Tinel hall with fireplace, and preserved remnants of mural paintings. Guided tours with commentary explain the historical and architectural development of the castrum and castle. Tours may be seasonal; check the dates before your trip.

Remnants of the fortifications at Versols include a gate, towers and defensive walls. Around 1360–1370, the village was fortified again against the English; this included a small gate, three corner towers and two outer watchtowers. The Dolmen of Hermilix also adds to the evidence of local history: it is a simple-type dolmen situated on a tumulus approximately eight metres in diameter.

The Chapelle de Notre-Dame du Cayla lies about two kilometres from Versols on a rocky outcrop above the gorge. It is visible from Trail N°29. This makes the chapel a notable landmark along the tour, without implying that the hiking route includes an additional detour.
