Saujac lies in a loop of the Lot at the foot of the cliffs of the Causse du Quercy. The bend in the river and the rocky landscape give the village a clear setting. The Saut de la Mounine viewpoint offers a wide-ranging view of the surrounding area, while the Croix des Belges commemorates the story of Belgian families who were given refuge. Old washhouses add to the local sights; fishing is also possible in the Saujac area. For planning your trip, landscapes, remembrance and outdoor activities therefore offer distinct points of interest.

Views of the Lot and the Causse

The Saut de la Mounine is a viewpoint on the Causse. From there, you can see the alluvial plain 150 metres below and the rocky ridges of the Causse de Gréalou. The village of Montbrun and its château are also visible from the viewpoint. The difference in elevation frames the view between the plain and the rocky landscape; Montbrun adds a visible village and château to the scene.

The Saut de la Mounine is on the D127 in 12260 Saujac. The viewpoint thus links a specific location with a broad perspective over the landscape. To get a sense of the surrounding area, consider the lower-lying plain, the rocky ridges of the Causse de Gréalou and the view of Montbrun as distinct features.

The Croix des Belges and village sights

The Croix des Belges commemorates Belgian families who were forced to leave their homeland in May 1940 during the German occupation and were given refuge at a farm in Toulonjac. After the war, a Belgian family settled in Saujac and donated the Croix in memory of the families who had helped them. The monument thus brings together two moments in time: the families’ refuge during the war and the later commemoration of it in Saujac.

The old washhouses are also among the village’s sights. They complement the story of the Croix with another local point of interest. The two have different character: the Croix commemorates a specific family story and the help offered during the occupation; the washhouses stand alongside it as village sights in their own right.

Circular walk and other activities

The circular route “Circuit sur les hauteurs de la Vallée du Lot – Saujac” leads to the viewpoints at the Croix des Belges and the Saut de la Mounine. It is 9.7 kilometres long, takes approximately three hours and starts in front of Saujac town hall. The route thus combines the landscape views from the Saut with the historic memorial site of the Croix. Its length and approximate duration provide a practical basis for planning your time; before setting out, check the route page for current trail-marking conditions.

Fishing is also possible in the Saujac area. You can assess the circular route by its course and approximate duration; fishing offers a different focus for your activities. During your stay, you can therefore choose between a named walk to two viewpoints and another leisure activity in the area.
