Sainte-Radegonde combines architectural history and a culture of remembrance with hiking and nature. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay here, you can plan your trip around your interests: the fortified church, the Mémorial Départemental de la Résistance, or the trails and nature activities. Your choice of excursions may depend on whether you are looking for a specific circular hike, a trail through several villages, or a historical focus.

Fortified Church and Historic Buildings

In the 14th century, during the Hundred Years’ War, defensive features were added to the fortified church of Sainte-Radegonde to protect the inhabitants. Forty refuge chambers were built above the church. During repeated attacks by looters, the inhabitants retreated there.

A wall painting from the late 13th century is located in the northern choir and depicts scenes of the earthly paradise as well as ex-votos. It therefore dates from an earlier period than the defensive features added to the church in the 14th century. Another historic building is the Maison Renaissance in Sainte-Radegonde: its street-facing façade and roof have been listed as a historic monument by decree since 17 July 1978.

Commemoration at the Mémorial Départemental de la Résistance

The Mémorial Départemental de la Résistance honours the 30 people shot in Sainte-Radegonde, as well as all the victims of Nazi barbarism in Aveyron. The memorial includes the execution site, with its firing mound and trench, a monument, a stele to the “Righteous” of Aveyron, and a memorial trail created by the Aveyron Department. A commemorative ceremony is held there every year on 17 August. If you plan to travel for the occasion, check the event details in advance.

Hiking and Landscape

The GR®62 passes through the municipality’s three villages: Inières, the village centre of Sainte-Radegonde and Istournet. It then follows the Roman road to Rodez. As route itineraries can change, check the current trail markings before setting out.

Circuit 15: Inières is an easy 7.5-kilometre circular hike with 170 metres of elevation gain and a duration of two hours. The trail starts at the car park on the square in front of the fountain in Inières and offers views of Rodez and Sainte-Radegonde. The two-hour loop can be planned for a specific time; the GR®62 focuses on the route through the three villages and on to Rodez.

The municipality’s natural heritage includes a mosaic of causses, the Ségala, the Rougier, mid-mountain terrain and waterways.

Fishing and Nature Activities

Fishing is permitted year-round at the Plan d'eau d'Istournet in Sainte-Radegonde; check local fishing regulations before your trip. In Sainte-Radegonde, Besoin de Nature offers a nature outing followed by a cooking workshop to discover and prepare wild plants. As booking arrangements can change, check the details in advance.
