Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès lies on the edge of the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park. For a stay focused on trails and landscapes, the routes vary in their course, length and stated duration: from the family-friendly Le tour d'Alzac to the Voie Verte du St-Affricain. If you’re looking for a hotel in Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès, the type of route can be a useful guide to help you decide whether the scenery and trails suit your itinerary.

Stone Walls, Building Styles and Geology

Le tour d'Alzac follows a path lined with boxwood, between hedges and fences, and alongside stone walls extending over two kilometres. The route is family-friendly and passes through the hamlets of Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès, characterised by solid Caussenard architecture. The trail boundaries, walls and regional building styles give it a different character from routes that focus mainly on distance or landscape sections.

Geology and nature also shape some of the area’s points of interest. Le volcan des causses passes through a landscape with fossil sites and close to the visible remains of volcanic activity that took place 2.5 million years ago. The remains lie near Alcapiès, on a hill above Saint-Jean. The Lavogne d'Hermilix now provides a refuge for numerous animal species and forms a small, biodiverse ecosystem. Geologic features and an ecologically distinctive natural area thus offer different ways to experience the region.

Trail N°27 Saint Jean d'Alcapiès is a moderately difficult 19.7-kilometre loop; it starts and finishes in Alcapia in Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès. In the final third of the trail, the Sentier du Volcan forms the return route to Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès. The Sentier des collines is also moderately difficult: the hike is 15.9 kilometres long and takes four hours and thirty minutes. After crossing the hamlet of Saint-Étienne-de-Naucoules, it descends alongside the Truans stream. At 19.7 kilometres, Trail N°27 is 3.8 kilometres longer; the distance of the Sentier des collines can also be considered alongside a specific time estimate.

The VTT N°05 – Causse de Nissac and VTT N°15 – Panoramas caussenards mountain-bike routes start and finish at the Salle des fêtes in Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès. Check current route conditions before setting out. For VTT N°05, it is also worth checking local access and parking rules.

The Voie Verte du St-Affricain is an easy, family-friendly and partly shaded route that follows a former railway line for part of its course. It connects Saint-Jean-D'alcapiès with the hamlet of Le Cambon via the town centre of Saint-Affrique and then Vabres-l'Abbaye. While the two VTT routes start and finish at the Salle des fêtes, the Voie Verte connects several places. Check current route and access conditions before setting out.

Entre Causses et Vallées offers another perspective: the 22-kilometre route runs between the Sorgues Valley, the heights of Hermilix and traditional agricultural landscapes. If you compare routes by scenery, this course differs from the architecture-focused setting of Le tour d'Alzac. This means you can take the named landscape features into account alongside the distance when making your choice.
