Montclar offers plenty to explore on days spent hiking, visiting viewpoints and discovering local history. The central Place aux Arcades is lined with stone houses, one side of which features arcades. The Des Sources aux Étoiles circular trail starts here. Another signposted hiking trail, Saint-Igest, begins in the village of Montclar.

Hiking and Views Around Montclar

Information about the trails can help you distinguish between different starting points and routes: Saint-Igest begins in the village, while Des Sources aux Étoiles starts at Place aux Arcades and follows the D60 to the viewpoint. This circular trail is listed as 21.6 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 820 metres. These figures give you concrete measures to help plan your outing; check current trail conditions and signage locally.

The Des Sources aux Étoiles trail passes Puech de Monclar and the Monts de Lacaune. Other features include viewpoints, tunnels and a river. This means the same route takes in a variety of landscapes and trail features. If you choose this trail, you can use these details alongside the distance and elevation gain as a guide when planning your hike.

From Montclar’s viewpoint, clear skies bring views across the deeply cut valleys of the Ségala and the rolling Rougier. Farther afield, the Monts de Lacaune, the Lévezou and the Larzac come into view; to the east, the Massif de l’Aigoual can also be clearly seen. These landscapes give the viewpoint a broad geographical scope, although visibility can vary with the weather.

Maps of the local hiking trails are displayed on information boards at Place de Montclar and in Saint-Igest. They are also available from the Réquistanais Tourist Office. Before your trip, check whether the maps are available there, and ask locally about current trail conditions.

Place aux Arcades and Local History

With its stone houses and arcaded side, Place aux Arcades shapes the village centre. It is also a specific starting point for the Des Sources aux Étoiles circular trail. The square can therefore be seen both as part of the village and as a landmark for this hike.

Montclar’s churches also offer glimpses into the past. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste contains two 19th-century paintings that are classified as protected and were recently restored. It is also recorded that the parish church of Montclar had been rebuilt only a short time earlier in 1849; its bell tower bears the date 1849.

In the same year, 1849, a reproduction of a religious painting was deposited in the parish church. Together with the rebuilding and the date on the bell tower, this provides a specific historical reference point for the village. The two protected 19th-century paintings offer a separate art-historical point of interest; their recent restoration is also part of the information about the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

Montclar’s Festival

Montclar’s festival takes place on the second-to-last weekend in July. If you would like to plan your trip around this period, check the exact event date in advance. This lets you include the festival as a possible part of your stay without assuming a specific date for any given year.
