In Lacroix-Barrez, excursion options range from exploring the history of the Château de Valon and the Musée du Cardinal Verdier to themed trails, cycling routes and insights into farming. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your time around culture, landscapes or local produce.

Castle, village and museum

The Château de Valon is a 12th-century feudal castle that is open to visitors. One distinctive architectural feature is the keep’s spiral staircase: built into the thickness of the wall in the 14th century, it leads 25 metres up to the keep’s terrace. Visiting arrangements may vary; check them before you arrive.

The village of Valon can also be explored on foot. Its only street, which runs in a ribbon-like line, is equipped with explanatory panels. Its architectural heritage includes Sécadous—small huts used to dry chestnuts—heavy slate roofs and dry-stone terraces. Valon has been awarded the “Site authentique et remarquable de l'Aveyron” distinction.

The Musée du Cardinal Verdier is located in the church crypt. It presents the cardinal, who was born in Lacroix-Barrez and served as Archbishop of Paris from 1929 to 1940. Personal belongings and family memorabilia complement the collection, along with letters, photos, newspapers and documents. The museum offers a guided tour with commentary. Check in advance whether you need to book an appointment.

Farming and local experiences

At the ferme de Dilhac, free visits to the organic farm are available by reservation. The visits explain techniques for making dairy products, ice cream and charcuterie; you can also see the animals in their natural surroundings. Confirm the reservation and visiting arrangements before you arrive.
