If you are looking for a hotel in Golinhac, the different trails and cultural sites can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. Golinhac sits on a plateau overlooking the steep gorges of the Lot. Its defining features include the Way of St. James, mountain biking circuits, and local heritage. A viewpoint also offers panoramic views across the Lot Valley and the Aubrac Mountains.

The Way of St. James and navigating the GR® 65

The Golinhac–Conques stage is part of the GR® 65 and the Via Podiensis on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. Permanent panels mark 80 km of the route. They explain the heritage visible from the trail, as well as the landscape, geology, and rural life. A free multimedia app, which can be installed on smartphones and tablets, also provides guidance along the GR® 65 and information on accommodation, food, and sightseeing. As digital services may change, check that the app is available before using it.

Comparing mountain biking circuits

The “La Descente dans les Gorges” circuit is a very difficult mountain biking route: it covers 23.5 km and has 850 metres of elevation gain. The “Circuit de la vallée de la Daze,” also a loop, is rated difficult, is 25 km long, and has 750 metres of elevation gain. The Daze route is therefore 1.5 km longer but has 100 metres less elevation gain; the stated difficulty ratings also differ. These figures allow for a specific comparison of the routes without treating their different difficulty ratings as equivalent. Conditions may vary; check them before setting out. The Daze circuit also includes a viewpoint over the Lot Valley and the ridges of Le Fel.

Views and trails through the landscape

Notre-Dame-des-Hauteurs offers panoramic views over the Lot Valley and the Aubrac Mountains. There is a car park and picnic tables at the foot of the hill. Golinhac itself overlooks the steep gorges of the Lot from its plateau. Another loop, “Circuit le grand plateau,” follows shaded trails lined with stone and wooden crosses, scallop shells, stone houses, and farmsteads. The described experience therefore ranges from expansive views to details along the trail. Golinhac’s landscaped pond also serves as a place to rest and relax.

Church, pilgrim cross, and La Chambre d'Or

The 15th-century pilgrim cross, Croix dels roumious, is an important waymarker on the Way of St. James. The original is kept inside Golinhac church. The pre-Romanesque church was remodelled in the 14th century and fitted with rooms used as accommodation in the 15th century. Its building history therefore encompasses both the early church and later alterations and additions.

Another work of art in Golinhac is La Chambre d'Or, a work designed as a shelter by performance artist Abraham Poincheval. From the village, walk past the church, take a small paved path on the right, then go down a flight of steps beneath the trees. This makes it easy to follow the route step by step; conditions along the way may vary, so check before your visit.
