Saurat – Mountains, Caves and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Saurat
The municipality of Saurat stretches from east to west between Calamès and Col de Port. Alongside these geographical landmarks, high peaks, a distinctive rock above the village and several hiking options define the area. Caves and historic sites add natural and cultural dimensions. Visitors planning their stay around the landscape and activities will find a range of highlights here, from comparing two easy circular walks to discovering the world of cave exploration.
Mountain scenery and distinctive rocks
Cap de la Dosse reaches 1,948 metres. The Pic de La Journalade, at 1,941 metres, lies right beside it; the neighbouring peaks are therefore just seven metres apart in elevation. Rocher de Carlong offers a different scale: this almost round rock, which appears to float, is about ten metres in diameter and towers over the village of Saurat. While Cap de la Dosse and Pic de La Journalade are the high points of the mountain landscape, Rocher de Carlong is directly associated with the village. Saurat’s landscape is thus expressed both in its high peaks and in a distinctive rock above the village.
Compare hiking trails by duration and ascent
The two easy circular walks differ in distance, time required and ascent. “Du buis au chêne” is 5.3 kilometres long; walking time is about two hours, with 250 metres of ascent. “Autour de Montorgueil” is shorter at 4.9 kilometres and takes about an hour and a half, making it more compact in terms of time, but has 304 metres of ascent. The longer loop is estimated to take about half an hour more, yet has 54 metres less ascent. So the shorter route does not automatically involve less climbing. The GRP Tour du massif des Trois Seigneurs long-distance trail also passes through Saurat, adding another hiking option alongside the two circular walks. Trail conditions and maintenance may change; check conditions before setting out.
Caves and cultural history
Grotte de Siech has 6,000 metres of galleries and is popular with cavers. Another caving activity is the family underground walk “Grotte de Saurat – Vertikarst,” designed as an introduction to cave exploration. It includes stalactite and stalagmite formations, erosion features in gleaming marble, and bones of cave bears dating back about 30,000 years. The activity is part of the 2026 season’s offerings; check its availability with the provider before visiting.
The Church of Saint-Blaise in Prat Communal was built between 1866 and 1870. Saurat’s artistic heritage also includes a fresco created by Van Vanzelle in 1971. Another cultural and historical point of interest is the “De Saurat à Prat Communal” route, which passes the site of the former forges of Esquérannes. The church, fresco and former forge site represent different historical connections: a period of construction, art and former craftsmanship.
Arts, crafts and regional cuisine
The 2026 edition of the arts and crafts market is set to feature local producers and a lunch with a Portuguese menu that draws on the region’s culinary traditions. The menu and program may vary from one edition to another.
