Art and City History in Pamiers
Pamiers combines contemporary art with a city centre enclosed by canals, historic architecture and signposted routes through the old town. This gives you different options when planning your trip: you might be interested in art, city history, a walk or the water park. Visiting conditions also vary by destination—from fixed opening hours to seasonal opening for some facilities.
The Carmel de Pamiers is a venue for contemporary art and is open to the public year-round. Visits are possible from Tuesday to Friday, 14:00 to 18:30; on Saturdays, there are two visiting periods, from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 18:30. Admission is free. Saturday is therefore the only one of the listed visiting days with a morning period; on the other listed days, visiting hours are in the afternoon. Check opening hours before your visit, as they may change.
Canals and Routes Through the Old Town
For nine centuries, the canals of Pamiers have surrounded the city centre. This shapes the layout of the inner city: looking at the town plan, you can see the centre as an area surrounded by water. The canals thus connect a long-standing historical relationship with a distinctive spatial feature of Pamiers.
Two signposted routes run through the old town of Pamiers. One follows the Way of St James through the city from west to east. If you are planning a walk, you can follow the marked routes; the Way of St James offers a clear west-to-east direction. The routes connect your exploration with the old town, while the canals enclose the city centre.
Saint-Antonin Cathedral
Saint-Antonin Cathedral brings together several distinctive architectural details. The surviving Romanesque portal dates from the 12th century; its capitals are decorated with biblical scenes. The capitals—the upper sections of the columns—give the portal a figurative theme. There is also a remarkable 18th-century organ case, which is classified as a Monument historique. The portal and organ case offer two distinct points of reference in the building’s history: the Romanesque portal and the much later organ case.
Access is important when planning your visit: the cathedral is currently closed. It is occasionally opened for group tours by request. If you are considering such a tour, check in advance whether it is possible. The walk from Pamiers railway station to the cathedral takes less than 20 minutes; walking time may vary depending on the route.
Neptunia: Pools and Season
Neptunia water park is open year-round, though its opening hours vary by season. It has a 25 m sports pool with six lanes and a 50 m outdoor pool, also with six lanes, which opens seasonally. The pools are easy to compare: they have the same number of lanes, and the outdoor pool is twice as long as the sports pool. The outdoor pool’s seasonal opening is an additional factor to consider when planning. Check current access conditions and opening periods before travelling.
When choosing when to travel, compare the facilities: the Carmel is open to the public year-round, Neptunia’s outdoor pool opens seasonally, and the water park itself remains open year-round. Take the relevant times and access conditions into account when planning your visits.
