Château De Montségur stands at 1,207 metres on the highest part of a rocky spur known as the Pog. Cathar history, the village museum, and several trails give the area a variety of highlights. When planning a stay, be sure to distinguish the time needed to visit the museum from the longer hiking routes.

Cathar History and the Museum

Château de Montségur is an important site in the history of the Cathars. The present-day château is mainly the result of the rebuilding of a new royal fortress, commissioned by the King of France from the second half of the 13th century onwards, after the fall of the Cathar castrum. The former castrum and the fortress built later therefore belong to different historical periods.

The GR® 107, the Chemin des Bonshommes, connects Foix in Ariège with Berga in Spain and includes Montségur as a site of Cathar heritage. The Musée archéologique et historique de Montségur is also located in the village. A signposted footpath leads there from the château. Check the latest information about the route and access before travelling. Allow 20 to 60 minutes for a museum visit, depending on your interests. Reconstructions at the Musée de Montségur illustrate the layout of the former Cathar castrum.

Hikes by Duration and Destination

The Tour du pog is a trail of about two hours around the Pog, offering unusual views from a distance. Mountain conditions can vary. The hike to Jasse de Prémaout takes about two hours and leads to a small shelter overlooking the valley floor of Montségur; its duration depends on conditions. La Canalette takes about an hour and a half and leads to mountain grasslands with gentians, holly, and rowan trees. Here, too, walking times may vary depending on conditions.

The Tour du Roc de la Mousse is a two-hour circular hike with a difficult section on a steep slope. The difficulty of the terrain may vary depending on conditions. By duration, La Canalette, at about an hour and a half, is the shortest of the four hikes described; the other three are listed at around two hours.

Crafts and Landscape

Cœur de tr’âme offers spinning and weaving in Montségur, as well as an introductory workshop on medieval wool processing. The workshop uses experimental archaeology and hands-on teaching. Check its availability before travelling.

The Massif de Saint-Barthélemy regional nature reserve extends across more than 1,000 metres of elevation, from the montane to the alpine zone. Its ridges feature alpine grasslands and low-growing heathland vegetation. The different elevation zones and the habitats mentioned describe the natural environment, while each hiking trail has its own duration and destination.
