L'herm: Bats, Trails and Heritage
Accommodation in L'herm
L'herm can be explored through three themes: the protected area of Grotte de L'Herm, marked trails and individual cultural sites. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the cave’s restricted visiting opportunities from the information about walks and monuments. Details about the local area and activities can help you decide whether to focus your stay on nature, outdoor activities or local history.
Nature: protected area and visiting conditions
Grotte de L'Herm is protected as a Natura 2000 site because numerous bat species occur there. Visits are prohibited during extended periods when bats are breeding and roosting. Visiting permits may be issued for two weeks in March and during September; this possibility does not mean that access is generally permitted. Check the access conditions again before making plans. Bat protection and the specific visiting conditions should both inform your decision about whether to plan a cave visit.
Hiking and trail maintenance
The marked circular route, Boucle par le Pas del Theil, is 6.8 km long and has 186 metres of elevation gain. These two figures describe different aspects of the route: its distance and its stated elevation gain. Take both into account when planning your outing. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
On the Lo camin de las parets e deus boishs trail, maintenance work is supplemented by the Office de Tourisme de Foix-Varilhes, which manages this shared trail. This concerns the maintenance and management of this trail, not the route measurements for Boucle par le Pas del Theil.
Heritage in L'herm and Baragne
The restored washhouse in Baragne is on Chemin de La Calmette, just behind the hamlet of Baragne. It offers another perspective on local heritage, featuring a different type of structure from the war memorial: a restored washhouse rather than a commemorative monument.
The Monument aux morts in L'Herm was erected at the end of 1920 and is dedicated to the wars of 1914–1918 and 1939–1945. Its construction date falls after the first and before the second of the two periods mentioned; the date and dedication therefore emphasize different points in time. The monument stands in the cemetery to the right of the parish church entrance and faces west. A sculpted Latin cross sits on its pedestal. Its location, orientation and cross describe its specific design, while the dedication identifies what it commemorates.
Horse riding with En Selle
En Selle is based in L'Herm and offers horse rides on the trails of Ariège. The activities cater to a range of profiles and all experience levels, for people aged 7 to 77; riders aged 7 and over can take part. The two activities involve different planning considerations: the distance and elevation gain help you assess the Boucle, while experience levels and the age range are the main considerations for the rides.
