Fabas: Local History and Leisure Activities
Accommodation in Fabas
Fabas combines local history with a range of leisure activities. At Place de la halle, parts of the church, market halls and Château are protected; the history of the village church and the Château de Poudelay adds further historical layers. There are also horseback rides, a multi-day hiking trip and a visitor attraction with animals and activities. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between these highlights: cultural history and leisure activities each bring their own character to a stay.
Village Setting and Architectural History
At Place de la halle, the façades and roofs of the church, market halls and Château are designated as a protected site. The designation has been in effect since 24 December 1943. It covers clearly identified structural elements of three buildings, giving the village setting a distinct historical focal point.
The Château de Poudelay was probably built as a fortified house in the 15th century. Its present-day appearance is shaped primarily by alterations made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thus, a likely early origin sits alongside considerably later changes. The Château also preserves the remarkable panoramic wallpaper “Vues d’Italie” by the Dufour manufactory, dating from the 1820s. It adds an art-historical detail to the building’s history, with its own title, maker and period.
The village church of Fabas already existed in the early 14th century and was rebuilt in the 19th century, with the exception of the bell wall. Its portal features beautiful capitals. Its building history therefore differs from that of the Château: here, the church’s early origins and the bell wall retained during the rebuilding take centre stage, complemented by the detail at the portal.
