Ercé is historically associated with the bear-leaders of the Ariège Pyrenees. The expression “capitale historique des orsalhers” — historic capital of the bear-leaders — sums up this cultural heritage. In Ercé, alongside this history, you’ll find a museum and a chapel listed as a historic monument. There is also a themed plant trail, cycling circuits and places connected with picnics and geology. This gives you the option of focusing on cultural history or outdoor activities during your trip.

Bear-leader history and architecture

The bear-leader school established in Ercé is considered the only one of its kind in France. Another way to explore the subject is the Musée des Montreurs d’Ours: it invites visitors to discover rare objects, books, moving testimonies, travel accounts and unpublished documents; videos and films complement the exhibits. The mix of objects, accounts and audiovisual displays offers different ways to explore bear-leader history.

The Ancienne chapelle Saint-Pierre provides an architectural highlight. Its Romanesque portal features a rare bas-relief of Saint Peter. The chapel was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 19 March 1979. Two aspects of this building can therefore be distinguished: the relief is a specific detail of the portal, while the listing indicates the chapel’s monument status.

Places to rest and explore geology

Picnic tables are available at the Plan d’eau d’Escalusse — a practical option if you’re planning a break. The Rocher du Calvaire includes a geological area and offers a different focus. The two places appeal to different interests: the Plan d’eau is about places to rest, while the Rocher is about geology.

Trails and activities

Along the Chemin des plantes qui soignent, information panels describe plants used for their medicinal and aromatic properties. The panels were created with the support of women from the village. The trail thus combines knowledge of plants with local involvement. It is rated easy, and its estimated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes. These two details answer different planning questions: the rating indicates the level of difficulty, while the time estimate helps you work out how long to allow for the route.

In Ercé, cycling circuits are available for road bikes and mountain bikes. This activity differs from the themed plant trail in its mode of transport and circular route. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Travel by TAD and intercity bus

If you’re travelling by TAD or intercity bus, the ticket rule is also worth noting: one ticket lets you switch between the two without an extra charge. Check the ticket and transfer rules again before travelling and planning your connection.
