Saint-Quirin: Silbermann Organ, Priory and Vosges
Accommodation in Saint-Quirin
Saint-Quirin lies among the green hills of the Vosges, at the foot of Donon. Two themes particularly define the area for visitors: its religious and architectural heritage, and the surrounding hiking trails. If you’re looking for a hotel in Saint-Quirin, you can plan your trip around whether you’d rather focus on churches, the organ and archaeological remains, or trails through forests and rolling hills.
Priory, parish church and Silbermann organ
The former priory was founded in the early 12th century and developed into an important pilgrimage centre. It was rebuilt in the early 18th century under Prior Dom Herbe. The former priory church now serves as the parish church; it was listed as a historic monument in 1994.
The priory church dates from 1722 and has three onion-domed towers. It is built of Vosges sandstone. The organ has a special connection to the region’s musical history: Johann Andreas Silbermann built it in 1746. It is considered the only surviving example of his organ-building work in Lorraine.
Religious buildings with their own histories can also be found beyond the town centre. Seven churches and chapels around Saint-Quirin are known as the “7 Roses” and serve as places of pilgrimage and worship. The Haute-Chapelle is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century, on the plateau above Saint-Quirin. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the town and the Vosges; visibility depends on the weather.
Archaeological and industrial traces
The Croix Guillaume archaeological site lies on a plateau and encompasses the features of a Gallo-Roman hamlet: residential areas, economic activities, places of worship and a necropolis. From Saint-Quirin, you can reach the site by car followed by a ten-minute walk, or on foot in about 45 minutes. The actual duration may vary depending on trail conditions. Guided tours with commentary are available; arrange the details locally before your visit.
Lettenbach, the hamlet also known as “la Verrerie”, reveals another chapter in the area’s history. Remains of the former “Manufacture Royale” can still be seen there. They include cellar openings to storage rooms, as well as underground galleries beneath the large furnace hall. The surviving structures point to the site’s former use as a glassworks.
Hiking in the Vosges
The Circuit de la Haute-Chapelle circular hiking trail is 9 km long and leads to the Haute-Chapelle above Saint-Quirin. It is rated moderate and takes about three hours. Check trail conditions before setting out, as both the difficulty rating and duration may depend on local conditions.
For a different time commitment, the walk to Croix Guillaume is a useful point of comparison: the walk from Saint-Quirin takes about 45 minutes, while the circular route to the Haute-Chapelle is listed as taking about three hours. These are different routes to different destinations. The 4,152-hectare Forêt domaniale de Saint-Quirin offers extensive hiking opportunities; the size of the forest and the signposted circular route are two distinct aspects of the area’s nature and hiking options.
