If you are considering Boulay-Moselle as a travel destination, there are several distinct themes to choose from: traces of the town’s former fortifications, churches and organs, marked hiking trails, and Macarons de Boulay. The churches and organs offer their own architectural and musical history. Les dames Dadas is a specific circular hike with a stated distance and duration. The macarons, meanwhile, bring together a local specialty and the history of its recipe. For your stay, you can prioritize what interests you most: heritage, outdoor activities, or regional sweets.

History, Churches and Organs

The Dada Towers are the only surviving towers of the former fortified town of Boulay-Moselle. You can visit them from the outside free of charge and independently. Check local visiting conditions before your trip.

Another historical aspect is the construction of Boulay-Moselle’s castle and fortifications in the Middle Ages under the rule of the Lords of Boulay. A building already stood at the site of the Chapelle Sainte-Croix in 1544; in 1713, a hermit rebuilt the chapel.

The imposing Église Saint-Etienne, a barn-style church built of red sandstone, was completed in 1782. It preserves a baptismal font dating from 1518. Its neoclassical organ has four manuals and 54 stops, as well as 3,600 pipes, including 114 façade pipes.

The Protestant temple in Boulay-Moselle was built in 1884 in the Gothic Revival style. It has housed a Dalstein-Haerpfer organ since 1905. Together with the neoclassical organ in the Église Saint-Etienne, it offers a distinct point of comparison for anyone interested in organs: one instrument is associated with a maker and a year, while the other is described by its four manuals, 54 stops, and precisely stated number of pipes.

Hiking from Boulay-Moselle

Les dames Dadas is a signposted circular hiking trail that starts in Boulay-Moselle. It is 9.9 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The trail climbs to a plateau offering panoramic views over Boulay-Moselle. Route details may change due to maintenance work or detours. Before setting out, check the trail conditions and markings.

Another option is the 36.4-kilometer hiking route “From Boulay-Moselle to Volmerange-lès-Boulay via Valmunster.” It connects Boulay-Moselle with Volmerange-lès-Boulay via Valmunster. By comparison, Les dames Dadas is described as a circular route with a stated duration and leads to a panoramic view over Boulay-Moselle. This lets you compare the two routes by distance and their respective courses.

Macarons de Boulay

Macarons de Boulay offer another focus for your stay. Monsieur and Madame Lazard perfected the recipe in 1854. The macarons are made exclusively with fresh almonds, sugar, and egg whites, and shaped by hand with a spoon. They have received the state designation “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” and the “Qualité MOSL” label.

Information published in 2020 mentions guided visits for groups of up to 30 people as an option. If you are planning such a visit, ask in advance about current booking options.
