Laxou: Hotels Between Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Laxou
Laxou offers visitors several points of interest for their stay: historic sites, cultural attractions and green spaces. Its sights and walking routes cover a range of themes—from information panels on local history and architectural landmarks to outdoor art, parks and woodland.
Historic Sites and Buildings
The historic trail through Laxou Village runs along the neighborhood’s streets, with 18 information panels. They introduce local places, events and notable people. Each stop links the route to the history of the area and offers a tangible introduction to Laxou’s past.
One prominent landmark is the Croix Saint-Claude, also known as the Croix des Pestiférés. It is considered Laxou’s oldest monument and dates from 1586. Its origins are linked to the plague epidemic of 1584: the cross was erected after the epidemic so that plague victims could attend services outdoors. Its name, date and traditional purpose are therefore connected.
The Église Saint-Genès also tells the story of the site’s architectural history. The present church is the fifth religious building to stand there; the foundation stone for the current building was laid on July 8, 1877. One distinctive feature is that the church has no choir. Instead, a new bay and a wall were built, with the altar placed against it. The description highlights the difference between the succession of buildings and the distinctive design of the present one.
The former Saint-Paul Church was built in 1963 and later converted into the Espace Europe. The hall is used for conferences and performances. Here, the building’s former use as a church can be distinguished from its later cultural function.
Walks and Cultural Activities
CityGem offers an interactive walk in Laxou focused on nature and heritage. GPS directions guide the walk, and audio, text and photo content is triggered automatically at points of interest. Unlike the historic trail with its 18 information panels, this experience uses GPS and multimedia content. Check that the app is available before setting out; its features may change with software updates.
“En Dehors des Sentiers Battus” was a three-year outdoor art exhibition in Laxou. Since it was established in 2003, works by artists have been displayed along paths and in parks, orchards and gardens. By the 2019–2020 editions, the exhibition had presented nearly 100 works in total. The format brought art to a variety of outdoor settings, and its history here extends through those editions.
The Bibliothèque-Médiathèque Gérard Thirion holds around ten exhibitions each year and regularly organizes related talks with artists and creative workshops. If you want to attend a particular event, check the latest dates, as the annual program may change.
Parks and Woodland
The Parc d’agrément du Champ-le-Boeuf was created on the site of a former quarry and covers nine hectares. It features children’s playgrounds, recreational areas and walking paths. The park brings together a variety of amenities across a clearly defined site.
The ForĂŞt domaniale de Haye covers a much larger area. It extends over 6,034 hectares and includes Laxou and six other municipalities. Since 2018, the forest has been designated a protected forest. Laxou is therefore part of a woodland area that spans several municipalities.
The Parc du Fond de Lavaux lies on the slopes above the Village and is an official LPO nature reserve. Its described features include a semi-wooded meadow, an orchard and beehives. A project to create a wetland is also underway. Along with the former quarry site and the woodland shared by several municipalities, this park offers another distinct natural setting in Laxou.
