Froville
Accommodation in Froville
Froville brings together architectural history, gardens and music. Highlights include the Église Notre-Dame et prieuré, the surviving remains of the cloister, the Jardin d’Harmonies and the festival of sacred and baroque music.
Architectural history of the church and priory
The Église Notre-Dame et prieuré is partly registered as a Monument historique and partly classified as a Monument historique. Its documented main building phases date from the 11th, 15th and 16th centuries. The church’s Gothic choir adds to this sequence and dates from the 14th century. Froville thus brings together several distinct periods of architectural history, rather than just one date of origin.
In addition to the church, remains of the cloister built in the 15th century have survived. The Église also contains two surviving tombstones; one of them bears the date 1551. This date provides a specific historical reference, but does not apply to both tombstones.
Part of the cloister is also connected with another place: some of the western arcades of Froville Priory are on display at The Cloisters of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The remains beside the church and the arcades displayed there each have their own connection to the history of the priory.
Jardin d’Harmonies: roses and ancient box trees
The Jardin d’Harmonies adjoins the 11th-century church and the 15th-century cloister. It is open from spring through autumn. The garden is therefore next to two structures whose histories span different centuries; the garden and the historic architecture offer two distinct highlights to consider when planning your trip.
The Jardin d’Harmonies is home to box trees that are around two hundred years old. The roses include English roses, old roses and so-called new old roses. The plants are labelled with their common and Latin names. This lets you match the familiar names of the roses with their botanical names, while the different rose categories shape the horticultural side of your visit.
Plan your travel dates and visits
The Festival de musique sacrée et baroque de Froville takes place every year between May and September. If you’re planning a trip that includes both the festival and the garden, it’s worth taking both time frames into account: the garden is open from spring through autumn, while the festival takes place annually from May to September. For a trip centred on an event, check the festival programme dates rather than treating the entire period as a single event date.
Guided tours and educational visits to the Prieuré de Froville are available on request. If a guided tour is important for your trip, make an enquiry. This gives you different planning considerations for music, gardens and architectural history: plan a festival visit around the specific dates, a garden visit around its seasonal opening period, and request guided tours separately.
