Conflans-en-Jarnisy brings together local history and culture with a wooded park. The town’s name comes from the confluence of the Orne and Yron rivers. Different interests can shape your stay: walks and exercise in Parc d’Apremont, architectural history, archaeological finds or mechanical music. This allows you to discover the destination from a range of cultural perspectives.

Parc d’Apremont: walks and exercise

Parc d’Apremont is a four-hectare wooded park on a former castle motte in the town centre. The park is open at all times for walks; as access arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit. A wooden children’s play area and playful educational installations about flora and fauna add distinctive touches. There is also a FitPark among the trees for sporting activities. Walks, nature topics, play and exercise are all available side by side in the same park.

The history of Château-fort de Conflans

Château-fort de Conflans was built in 995 by Jean d’Apremont on the site of today’s Parc d’Apremont. The fortress was destroyed in 1636 on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu; after an attempt to rebuild it, it was finally laid waste in 1669. The dates distinguish the construction of the château-fort from the two later setbacks. The fortress’s history also connects the name of today’s park with a specific chapter in the town’s past.

Mechanical music and fairground art

The Musée de l'art forain et de la musique mécanique was founded in 1985. It presents more than 300 folk-art exhibits dating from 1860 to 1960, including salon barrel organs, music boxes, phonographs, Limonaire fairground organs, automata and player pianos. The collection offers a different cultural focus from the history of the fortress, centring on mechanical musical instruments and fairground objects. The museum is closed to the public; exceptional openings take place during the year for occasions such as Heritage Days, Museum Night and Christmas. If you are planning a visit, check the dates of these special openings in advance.

Church, ossuary and Roman find

Église Saint-Martin was built in 1844 in the town centre, on the site of the former chapel of the Château de Conflans. The building project had already been drawn up in 1841 by M. Bauchet, an architect from Briey. The two dates mark the church’s planning and construction. The Ossuaire stands at the edge of the Conflans cemetery and is fully protected as a historic monument; it was listed on 23 November 1987.

The Masque de Conflans is another link to the past. A Roman burial discovered in 1908 on the road from Conflans to Jarny contained a face mask. It belonged to the movable helmet of a presumably Roman officer and is known as the Masque de Conflans. The French Ministry of Culture designated the mask a “Trésor National”. Thus, religious architecture, historic preservation and Roman archaeology feature alongside the museum’s mechanical music culture in the town’s history.
