Masseret: Views, heritage and paths in the green
Accommodation in Masseret
If you choose Masseret as a destination for a hotel stay, cultural history, views and paths in the green may shape your plans. A historic tower and a listed church stand alongside activities at Plan d’eau des Forges and several routes. First consider whether you would like to focus on architectural history, landscape or exercise: each place and activity offers a different emphasis.
Tour de Masseret: History and panoramic views
The Tour de Masseret was built in 1957 on the site of a former feudal castle. At the summit, an orientation table offers a 360-degree panorama. The named landscapes include the Monédières, the Plateau de Millevaches and the Monts d’Auvergne. The table helps you identify these landscape areas in the wide-ranging view. Since 2023, the tower has also had panels explaining the landscape and presenting the history of the commune.
The tower is open daily and free to access. Check the access conditions again before your trip. This will help you plan your visit and take in the viewpoint, its history and the information about the landscape together, without assuming a particular length of stay.
The church and heritage trail
The Église Sainte-Catherine-d’Alexandrie also tells the story of different construction phases. Its origins lie in the Romanesque period; it was rebuilt in the 16th century and received its openwork bell tower in the early 20th century. These successive phases bring together different eras in a single building. The church is listed as a historic monument under a decree dated 22 December 1986.
The Masseret heritage trail offers another way to explore history. With around twenty explanatory panels, it provides insights into old Masseret. If you are interested in the history of the place, this trail offers a distinct focus: the explanations along the heritage trail take centre stage, while the panels at the tower cover the landscape and the history of the commune.
Plan d’eau des Forges and the forest
At Plan d’eau des Forges, activities on the water go hand in hand with opportunities to explore the forest. The lake covers five hectares and has a beach accessible to people with reduced mobility. Stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats are available to rent seasonally. Before travelling, check whether rentals are available during your travel dates.
A fitness trail and hiking paths allow you to explore the 100-hectare forest by Plan d’eau. Alongside seasonal boating activities, you can also choose paths and a trail for exercise on land. The lake, beach and forest each offer a different aspect of a visit; the details about size and accessibility apply to the specific feature mentioned.
Forest paths and circuits
The PAPSE Masseret-Lamongerie route runs almost entirely along forest paths and passes through the Forêt de Montard, in the heart of the Limousin’s flora and fauna. The mountain-bike circuit Forêt de Meilhards has different defining details: it starts in the commune of Masseret-Lamongerie and is 33 kilometres long. This makes it possible to distinguish between a described forest-path route and a circuit with a stated length, without inferring from the information that the routes are connected.
The Circuit du plan d’eau starts at the Masseret-Lamongerie tourist complex. Together with the heritage trail and the paths by Plan d’eau, it adds another named circuit to the selection. For your plans, you can therefore compare the type of activity and the details given for each: landscape information at the tower, historical panels along the heritage trail, forest paths on the PAPSE route, the length of the mountain-bike circuit or the starting point of the Circuit du plan d’eau.
