Explore Clergoux Based on Your Travel Interests

Clergoux offers a range of attractions: hiking and geocaching in the Domaine de Sédières, cycling, leisure activities at Étang du Prévot and historic buildings. When choosing your destination, consider what interests you most during your stay. This can help you decide whether to spend your time on paths through forests and around ponds, on bike rides, enjoying a seasonal day of swimming, or exploring cultural history. The specific differences between these activities help you get a better sense of what a stay in Clergoux is like.

Hiking and Geocaching Around Sédières

Le Tour des Étangs is an easy, 5.4-kilometre circular hiking trail in Clergoux. It passes through the Domaine de Sédières and takes in its ponds and forest. This gives you both the route length and its type: you can consider a circular route rated as easy. The route description also connects the hike with the landscape features that define the area.

Another option is the “Réunion de chantier” geocaching route in the Domaine de Sédières. It is four kilometres long, has a difficulty rating of 2 out of 5, is free of charge and available year-round. Compared with the 5.4-kilometre circular trail, it is shorter and described as a geocaching route rather than a hiking trail. The length and difficulty rating apply to this route; the circular trail, by contrast, is rated “easy.” This makes it possible to compare the two activities by type and stated distance.

Cycling Routes and Activities at Étang du Prévot

The Sédières mountain biking centre has twelve marked mountain bike trails, ranging from five to 100 kilometres in length. The centre also rents bicycles and offers guided discovery tours for teenagers and adults. Rentals and tours may depend on reservations and the season. When making your choice, it is helpful to distinguish the marked mountain bike network from other cycling routes: the Sédières grounds in Clergoux are also on the Véloroute V87 La Vagabonde.

At Étang du Prévot, a 33-hectare lake in Clergoux, supervised swimming is available from mid-July to mid-August; dates may vary. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the current dates before travelling. The lake also has fishing opportunities, children’s play areas and picnic tables. These facilities are subject to local maintenance. If they are important to your visit, it is a good idea to check their condition in advance.

Architecture and Regional History

The grounds of Château de Sédières cover 130 hectares of forests, ponds and running water. The château itself was built in the 14th century by Jean Boutier and altered during the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1958. The building history thus distinguishes its original construction from later alterations.

Clergoux Church also offers several points of historical interest. It was already in existence in 1025 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1972. Its single-nave layout and flat-ended choir with a 13th-century rib vault are specific architectural features. The church’s early existence and the dating of the vault refer to different points in its history.

The Transcorrézien is also part of the region’s history: this narrow-gauge tramway operated until the 1960s. Its network covered 190 kilometres between Tulle and Ussel. Together with the building histories of the château and the church, it forms a cultural focus that encompasses both historic architecture and the former transport history of Corrèze.
