Accommodation in Tordères
If you are looking for a hotel in Tordères, you can plan your trip around your specific interests in history, nature and educational activities. The Église Sant Nazari brings together architectural and artistic features; the ZNIEFF Massif des Aspres describes natural areas and biodiversity. A workshop about donkeys adds an educational activity connected with hiking to these themes. The sections below organize the different points of interest by their specific details.
Church, local history and art
Tordères was first mentioned in 899 as villa Tordarias. The Église Sant Nazari preserves traces of a Romanesque church. Its bell tower dates from the 13th century and has the appearance of a fortified tower. The polychrome altarpiece in the church was completed in 1749.
These dates refer to different things: 899 to the first mention of the village, the 13th century to the bell tower and 1749 to the altarpiece. This makes it possible to place the village’s history, architecture and furnishings in their separate historical contexts. When establishing the chronology, it is also useful to distinguish between a century and a specific year of completion.
An altarpiece is a decorative structure behind or above an altar; polychrome means multicoloured. These terms describe the artwork and its colour scheme.
The processional statue known as Sant Nazari was donated to the community and placed in the Église Sant Nazari. During its restoration, overpainting was removed, and its hand and feather were reattached. Unlike the altarpiece, this statue’s story centres on its donation, placement and restoration.
Natural environment and landscape
Tordères is partly covered by the Type II ZNIEFF “Massif des Aspres” (No. 6614-0000), which covers 50 percent of the municipal area. The ZNIEFF includes forests, maquis and garrigue landscapes. It is reported to contain 41 notable plant species, 16 bird species, 3 reptile species, 3 bat species, 13 insect species and 1 mollusc species. Species counts may change as knowledge of biodiversity grows. The area, landscape types and species groups each shed light on a different aspect of the natural environment.
The Forêt domaniale du Réart state forest covers 108 hectares within Tordères. Here, the area is given in hectares, whereas the ZNIEFF is described as a proportion of the municipal area. These different measures help put each figure in its own context.
Educational workshop with donkeys
La Ferme aux Ânes de Tordères offers an educational workshop on keeping and handling donkeys, as well as accompanying them on hikes. The educational format combines knowledge about the animals with a practical connection to hiking. If you include this activity in your plans, confirm that it is currently available before travelling.
